1)They’ve got to operate under the assumption that any threat that isn’t completely unrealistic is happening or else they will get fucked into oblivion by lawsuits and the media for ignoring a serious threat that got people killedWhat the fuck is up with boomers? Are they literally retarded? I know not everyone knows what videogames are but a little bit of common sense could potentially save someone's life.
2) swat teams face little to no consequences for tossing flashbangs into infant cribs at the wrong address, so they’re happy to shoot first, shoot second, shoot a third time just to make sure, and then leave the question asking to the detectives at any place where there is a “threat”
this means they potentially face less penalties for shooting an innocent person in a swatting than they do for ignoring it, so you do the math.
that being said, in more savvy departments who have dealt with multiple swatting against the same individual, say an overweight wannabe sci-fi writer, the cops will usually send a single unit to check with swat on standby, because mobilizing the team costs overtime hours and paperwor.
