King of the hill appreciation thread - Yup.

Better she cry now and not in fifteen years when Bobby Hill not get promotion at dirt factory.
Or even not even following his dad's footsteps by working as a sales manager for Strickland Propane. Though he can still be a good comedian

Killing/retiring a character because the actor died is a dumb trend that The Simpsons started when Phil Hartman died. It was never like that in animation before.

True and that was mainly due to both how tragic Phil Hartman's death was in particular and because even at their peaks on the show, Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz were never quite on the level of the main Simpson family or side characters like Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, or Moe in terms of being part of the core cast.

Dale is one of the main characters on the show and is arguably the second most popular character after Hank.

With that said, I can understand taking the route of "The character died with the actor" for Dale Gribble in the revival, partly due to the fact that it's meant to be a distant sequel where the main cast is a lot older.

With all due respect to Johnny Hardwick, there's really no reason why they can't just get Dale a new voice actor. Voice actors die and get replaced all the time. Life goes on.
I'm open to that if they can get someone that sounds similar. Use the smoking as an excuse for the voice change. But I wouldn't be opposed to using AI either.

Yeah, it'll be so sick hearing some schlub try and fail to capture Dale's catch phrases and speech tics. That's the best way to garner goodwill for your new project involving an intensely-beloved series, too, is the replace the fan-favorite character's voice with a different actor. It'll go over super well and definitely wouldn't be awful and cringeworthy. While they're at it, they should update the rest of the cast, too. Why bother with Mike Judge playing Hank when we could get some random celebrity to do it?

I'd rather the show not come back at all, frankly. Not like it needed to, anyway.

I just found out DurhamRockerz closed his youtube account for some reason, but it seems like someone reuploaded most of his KotH youtube poops

To be 100% honest...

I'm not thrilled with a whole new series either, BUT I would really love to get a KOTH movie which uses the same concept. Kind of like how they did the "where are they now" as the finale of Silicon Valley.

Just a couple of hours to see how our characters grew and that life went on on Rainey St and leave it at that.

I'm beyond tired of seeing beloved characters from my youth being killed off. I witnessed Disney kill of Han, Luke, and Leia in that order. I don't want to see Disney kill Dale Gribble too.
I'm assuming this will be a one-and-done season like other revivals. Just use AI to finish out the season with the scripts that have been written.

While you’re right it’s impossible to ignore The Simpsons and all animated Sitcoms that came after its wake. The actors give a genuine performance that has heart and soul. King of the Hill especially had some of the best acting performances ever done on TV. Just watch the DVD documentary they made it goes over how much love was put into the show.
They talk about casting Luanne at the 13:00 point, the producer explains that all the other auditions gave a very generic and stereotypical “Ditzy Blonde” voice. Brittany Murphy’s voice brought the character to life.

Even if they found a perfect soundalike I’m just really soured on continuing King of the Hill. The show just captured a late 1990s America. We’re nearing the 30th anniversary and that America has changed.

Sure, we could let the respective deaths of Brittany Murphy and Tom Petty go, but nobody's gonna let Hardwick's death go, and replacing him is not gonna make things better because that would still be disrespectful.

How does KotH rate overseas? The humor is not only very American, is specifically Texan humor.
I had a Japanese friend in college that dismissed the show for its "ugly" character designs. I begged her to give it another chance. But maybe it's impenetrable for foreigners?
I watched it dubbed in latin american spanish back in the day and thought the show was dull and boring, nowadays i'm near the end of the last season and i love the show overall, knowing the language and American/Texan culture does help with enjoying the show.

I have no idea but it reminded me of a funny story from the DVD Commentary for the episode "How To Fire A Rifle Without Really Trying."

Anyway in one of the scenes Bobby and Hank go to Megalomart to buy rifles and Hank asks a clerk for "children's guns." After the episode aired a European (probably UK) journalists contacted the staff, he wanted to do an interview just based on that scene. To the journalist he thought this small dialogue was some poignant commentary on America's obsession over guns. He thought it was comedic exaggeration that a Walmart style department store would retail guns. The producer then explained to him that no it's completely normal for Walmarts across America not just Texas to have a hunting department and sell guns. The journalist realizing that KOTH was entirely sincere with its Gun episode then ended the call and that was it.

And that's what's so cool about King of the Hill. It never told you what you should think. The only time they ever made a real political message was at the very end of the episode involving General Santa Ana's fake leg and the narrator who I think was Mike Judge politely urging for it to be returned to Mexico as a gesture of good will. And 20+ years later ILLINOIS still has that damn thing! :lit:

Lucky should definitely be retired, since they created him specifically with Tom Petty in mind.

I'll say, if the new King of the Hill writers do mention Luanne and Lucky, they'd also better mention Buckley as well
