There's a reason "killing them with kindness" is an expression. Shit works. People legitimately don't know how to deal with genuine kindness or compassion. Whether they're trying to get a rise out of you and failing (which drives them mad) or they're just raging at you to get you to stop or go away but it washes off your back and you just keep on being nice, they go fucking insane over it.

I suspect it's because we trust literally no one these days and almost don't even believe real kindness and "niceness" exists anymore. So when we're confronted by it, we go to pieces trying to figure out "okay what's your angle?"
