George R.R. Martin Says “Anti-Fans” Have Ruined the Discussions Around Films, TV Shows on Social Media

The 'Game of Thrones' author wrote, "The era of rational discourse seems to have ended."

George R.R. Martin blames “anti-fans” on social mediafor the “rational discourse” around films and television shows ending.

The Game of Thrones author recently opened up in a post on his blog about what a “nightmare” last year was for him, both “professionally and personally.” He also admitted that he feels “so far 2024 looks to be even worse.”

While Martin said he tries to “take solace where I can. In chocolate thrones, if nowhere else, in books, in films and television shows,” he added that even “toxicity is growing” in those areas thanks to the era of social media.

“It used to be fun talking about our favorite books and films, and having spirited debates with fans who saw things different… but somehow in this age of social media, it is no longer enough to say ‘I did not like book X or film Y, and here’s why,'” he explained. “Now social media is ruled by anti-fans who would rather talk about the stuff they hate than the stuff they love, and delight in dancing on the graves of anyone whose film has flopped.”

Martin wrote the Song of Ice and Fire book series, which is what HBO’s Emmy-winning show Game of Thrones is based on. The author is also the co-creator and executive producer of the Game of Thronesprequel, House of the Dragon.

He wrote on his blog in December that season two of the series has wrapped filming and is set to premiere this summer. Though HBO hasn’t renewed House of the Dragon for another season yet, Martin also shared at the end of last year that he “spent two days locked in a room with [showrunner] Ryan Condal and his writing staff” to talk “about the third and fourth seasons of House of the Dragon.”

Putting aside his retarded political opinions and the fact that he hasn't yet finished the books, he is not wrong. Fans have gone deranged and it's impossible to discuss media with them on the loose infiltrating every community.

"Hey, I think this character is interesting despite he's the villain, his position is in f--"

I've met people like this in fandoms, and they end up getting you banned or isolated as soon as you don't agree with the narrative.

This is a fantastic example of coming to the correct conclusion in the wrongest way possible. It's true that these days, fandoms define themselves by what they hate rather than what they like.

What he gets wrong is where most of the hate is coming from, where most of it is going, and the nature of the rest of it. He, like all NPCs, believes that most fandom toxicity comes from racist incel misogynists who hate anyone who isn't a straight white man. His side, of course, does everything out of pure benevolence and love. We oppress you for your own good, chud.

It's been observed that people bond more over shared dislikes than likes. You can have in-depth sperg sessions with friends about a book, movie, show, or game, that you both love deeply… but that's where the discussion ends. You can only laud a piece of media for so long. Sometimes the thing is so good that you hardly need to belabor the point with others.

Negative reviews and opinions are (in general) far more entertaining, regardless. Anti-fans certainly are a phenomena, exacerbated by the Internet, but that's mostly 'cause they have more to say than the superfans, even if they're stupidly wrong in their critiques.

Imagine a fantasy book series like Fire and Ice except it's all gay niggers.

"Makaundu put out his hips out and gently twerked upon him - "Yo, ay' lord, let me ax you a question. You wanna fuck wid me?" and King Wakanda nodded, slightly shuffling to the side so he could pour two glasses of the finest Crown Royal.

"Ti's da good lyfe. I need a break anyways, ho - My finest kingdom scientist old heads are still trying to develop a chicken fry that can defeat the sickle cell plague that is, like making us all sick and shit."

Thats not what he is complaining about though. He is complaining because discontent with franchise slop is becoming more overt in currentyear no matter how hard it's army of producers and consultants hit the muh-diversity/muh-snarkyfunni/muh-nostalgia buttons which are themselves now slowly coming under fire for the shitty "gib pozz review and shame da hatorz plz" gimmicks that they are

Basically the only audience he and his friends want to exist is an infinite wailing mob of this guy

To all those moppets on the internet going "Yeah George! You tell em' ! OWN THOSE CHUDS!" ?

You realize that this is him basically saying he's never going to finish another book in his life and this is his narrative-approved excuse being put on record, right?

Right?

Alright, I interpret this as. "The HBO show's ending was what I genuinely wrote, I am butthurt that everyone hated the ending."
He is still retarded because, while the ending still isn't great, a lot of the groundwork is actually there for that ending to happen in the books that is completely absent from the show. He could also probably execute it better in a book than the terrible job the numb nut showrunners did. Hence why so many show only fans were completely whiplashed by the ending that came out of fucking nowhere and were only further perturbed by how terribly it was executed.

He is also still a lazy fatass who still hasn't finished his book he has had decades to complete and shouldn't be talking about fan discontent or really anything at all until he actually releases the damn thing.
