George R.R. Martin Says “Anti-Fans” Have Ruined the Discussions Around Films, TV Shows on Social Media

The 'Game of Thrones' author wrote, "The era of rational discourse seems to have ended."

George R.R. Martin blames “anti-fans” on social mediafor the “rational discourse” around films and television shows ending.

The Game of Thrones author recently opened up in a post on his blog about what a “nightmare” last year was for him, both “professionally and personally.” He also admitted that he feels “so far 2024 looks to be even worse.”

While Martin said he tries to “take solace where I can. In chocolate thrones, if nowhere else, in books, in films and television shows,” he added that even “toxicity is growing” in those areas thanks to the era of social media.

“It used to be fun talking about our favorite books and films, and having spirited debates with fans who saw things different… but somehow in this age of social media, it is no longer enough to say ‘I did not like book X or film Y, and here’s why,'” he explained. “Now social media is ruled by anti-fans who would rather talk about the stuff they hate than the stuff they love, and delight in dancing on the graves of anyone whose film has flopped.”

Martin wrote the Song of Ice and Fire book series, which is what HBO’s Emmy-winning show Game of Thrones is based on. The author is also the co-creator and executive producer of the Game of Thronesprequel, House of the Dragon.

He wrote on his blog in December that season two of the series has wrapped filming and is set to premiere this summer. Though HBO hasn’t renewed House of the Dragon for another season yet, Martin also shared at the end of last year that he “spent two days locked in a room with [showrunner] Ryan Condal and his writing staff” to talk “about the third and fourth seasons of House of the Dragon.”

I'm getting pretty tired of all the negativity surrounding being negative.

It makes it really hard to be negative when people are so negative about being negative.

People, GRRM included, should try to be more positive about being negative.
Honestly seeing negativity about negativity just makes me so much more positive about being negative both to that which those being negative were being negative to and those who are being negative to those being negative

Autistic wordplay aside, seeing just how shriekingly offended the social media cancer mob gets over unlicensed mockery and criticism of the product of the week is just astounding. Take the straight up cult that has developed around hating cinemasins like he dragged a dozen shaniquas behind his pickup truck until they were just red paste for making boring and overtly non-serious "logo silly, minus a gorillion points" quips. These retards, which include both the typical twitter troon and literal writers/directors involved in shitting out this slop, have been flailing at that guy for literal years by this point.

I would never had read your books if I knew your geriatric lard-ass was going to take 14+ year break between books. The theory about Jon Snow's parents that was obviously being set-up in the books, the one that you vehemently denied, was revealed to be exactly what happened. The ending sucks. The Nigh King's death was straight bullshit. I could go on but I just hate the books/series now so why bother?

I mean, it's exhausting to hear people complain all the god damn time, but it's not like they're not given good reason.

If anyone else is following the reporting by Film Threat recently, and if the stories they're telling are moderately credible, qualified people are being boxed out in favor of "diverse" candidates, and writers are demanding showrunner positions after only a couple of years.

It's hard not to believe any of those stories considering the output of Hollywood since around 2016. In a sane world, Ghostbusters 2016 would have blown all the hugboxes in Hollywood wide open and studios would have said: "oh, pandering doesn't make money, let's not do that anymore". Instead, we've been watching Hollywood collectively stick its fingers in its ears and go "lalalala, I can't HEAR the racists and sexists out there".

I realize that ESG and DEI have been shitting up all sorts of industries, but the difference in tolerance is that if you get paid to put up with it, then you need to. If you are paying for it, and have the option not to, then it's really easy to not have to.

Putting aside his retarded political opinions and the fact that he hasn't yet finished the books, he is not wrong. Fans have gone deranged and it's impossible to discuss media with them on the loose infiltrating every community.

"Hey, I think this character is interesting despite he's the villain, his position is in f--"
"WHAT ARE YUO SAYING HE IS A WHIET RAPIST MAN THISIS TRIGGERING TO ME BC I WAS ONCE RAPED BY A MAN WHO LOOKED AT ME BAD AND ITS THE SAME"

I've met people like this in fandoms, and they end up getting you banned or isolated as soon as you don't agree with the narrative.

Yeah but given those retarded political opinions (and another recent blog post I read) it doesn't seem like those are the fans he's angry with. More like your average farms poster for daring to have opinions like "it doesn't make sense to turn a white male medieval historical figure into a black woman," you know stuff that was uncontroversial like 8 years ago

George Fat Fuck Martin will never be John Tolkien. Always funny how the man who went to war wrote about a beautiful peace, and the man who never went to war writes about absolute degeneracy and brutal Mongoloidal Khan shit. But degeneracy works much better during the opulent 90s in America, while during an age of collapse (what we are in now) only the timeless and universal mythological concepts will last. Martin and Hollyjew are the Shadow to John's goodly creation.

It's a problem that the most hyped up media is mostly crap that's anti-normal people or is just poorly made. Like the Rings of Power show that was shoddy as hell, that short lived Willow show, Last of Us, and so on.

When 90% of the hyped up shows are things people hate then it doesn't leave people much to talk about other than how they hate it.

I'm really not a fan of Fantasy, in book form, film or TV - just doesn't appeal to me but George you could stop this by showing a modicum of progress or being honest and saying "I just can't write at the moment" people would be upset but they would be more likely to understand, problem is you've not been honest with your fans / readers so burned all your good will, to a level you will never get that level of leway every again nor a short breather even if you shat out 3 perfect books tomorrow just not going to happen.

I feel like he's conflating hatred, disappointment, nerdy nit-picking, and a few other things, and using that conflation to say that everyone who didn't like the ending is acting in bad faith.

The ending of the show sucked because it wasn't an ending.

Not to say that the man doesn't understand his own genre, but the whole series is "Period of instability in Magic Kingdom works itself out through war and marriage."

The whole series is putatively about who is going to sit on the Iron Throne (or otherwise lead Westeros) with various sub-plots about who is going to lead various houses/regions.

Bran is an unsatisfactory ending because Bran cannot father children and pass the throne on to a male heir, full stop.

Furthermore, even without a male heir, there's no good other next of kin. Sansa's the queen of a breakaway region and she's probably not eager to marry after the shit with Ramsey that wasn't even in the book, Arya's a fucking weirdo with zero qualifications, and Rickon and Robb are dead. Bran's bastard brother isn't even his actual brother, and even though he's got leadership experience and the right blood, he's got too many red flags what with letting the Wildlings in and fucking the Dragon Queen and moreover he would hate it. Maybe on the outside you could pull in Cousin Robin or Uncle Edmure as claimants, but let's be real, they're not serious candidates.

When Bran dies, shit's going to kick off again before the body is cold.

It's not an ending.

Last I looked the place where your own antifans congregated gave up because there's only so many times one can bitch about a fat lazy fuck with idiotic opinions like you. The big irony is that Lovecraft, about whom Martin wrote a bunch of sneering posts due to him dying nearly penniless and without an "exclusive IP" to his name so to speak, will still be remembered in a hundred years while this fatass will enjoy infamy at best for being a procratinating fat fuck.

It's a miracle A Dance with Dragons even got published when it did.
He already had half the book finished from the last time Random House forced him to publish something or they'd cut off the money tap, and this was before the show truly exploded and that trick stopped working on him.

On the one hand I get where he's coming from. It's annoying that you can't like something anymore without some faggot REEing at you for daring to enjoy something that they deem unworthy, because something something racism or something something degeneracy.
On the other hand finish your fucking book you fat lazy cunt.

And you have the opposite side of that any hint at diversity, female characters how interesting they are is met with the same level of screaming.

And any actor regardless of their role is lucky if they don’t have their face ripped off and just has to sit and take the abuse.
Alright, I interpret this as. "The HBO show's ending was what I genuinely wrote, I am butthurt that everyone hated the ending."
and he’s not wrong to be. All the groundwork was carefully laid in the books and because the tv fans were stupid enough to see Danny burning people at the drop at the drop of a hat as good previously when she did that again ‘suddenly’ it was bad

But him writing Winds of Winter like he said he would and giving them msterial to work with would have fixed that.

Quite literally his own fault. And he knows it. He’s bitter that he’ll die with his work unfinished and everyone thinking it was shit.

I’d be bitter too honestly.
