Authorities respond to reported shooting near Houston’s Lakewood church

Houston police quickly responded to Lakewood Church after receiving initial reports of possible shots fired around Lakewood Church.

The church confirmed shots were fired, adding, "Please pray for Lakewood and our community."

According to local law enforcement officials, the suspect has been shot and pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooter has been identified as a 30 to 35-year-old female who entered the church around 1:53 p.m. ET. She was holding a long riffle, carrying a backpack, and holding the hand of a small child.

Witnesses say she was claimed to have a bomb in her backpack and was spraying an unknown substance on the church's ground.

Multiple Law enforcement agencies are on-site collaborating on the investigation and will remain on the scene for the next several hours.

They believe this is an isolated incident, and they are conducting a deeper investigation to make sure no one else is inside the church.

Two victims had been taken to the hospital. A 5-year-old- boy is in critical condition and a 57-year-old male is being treated for a hip injury after being shot in the leg.

Several off-duty officers were at the church at the time of the shooting and were able to take the suspect down before she could claim any lives.

Governor Greg Abbott today issued a statement on the shooting near Lakewood church in Houston:

“Our hearts are with those impacted by today’s tragic shooting and the entire Lakewood Church community in Houston. Places of worship are sacred. I have been in contact with Mayor Whitmire and offered the full support and resources of the State of Texas, including Department of Public Safety officers and Texas Rangers, to help this community and help bring swift justice to the criminal who committed this heinous act. Join Cecilia and me in praying for this community during this difficult time and for the brave men and women in blue who acted quickly to respond to this tragedy.”

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said it is believed that the shooter was shot by a Harris County deputy.

"We also have HCSO deputies who work extra-jobs at the church," he added.

Lakewood Church, founded by Joel and Delores Osteen, is among the largest congregations in the country, averaging about 45,000 attendees per week, according to its website.

Officials set up a reunification center at Lamar high school and are asking people to avoid the area at this time.

Shooter at Joel Osteen’s megachurch used rifle bearing the word ‘Palestine,’ officials say​

The woman who was shot and killed Sunday afternoon at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston was carrying an assault style-type rifle with “Palestine” written on it, according to two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter.

The shooter, identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, 36, also made several statements during the course of the incident, but the officials declined to describe them. Law enforcement officials added that Moreno previously went by another, male name.


Moreno also brought her young son with her to the church, the officials said. During the incident, the shooter stated she had a bomb, but a search of the vehicle showed there were no explosive devices, officials said.

Law enforcement records show the shooter had at least six prior arrests since 2005, including unlawful carrying of a weapon, which she pleaded guilty to; evading arrest; and assault on a public official, which was pleaded to a lesser charge.


Police Chief Troy Finner said at a news conference Sunday that the boy was around 5 years old.


He added that one of the off-duty officers is an agent with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and the other is a Houston police officer.

Officials are investigating a wide range of possible motives given the writing on the weapon, but cannot yet conclusively say what led to the shooting. They have not ruled out terrorism or hate crime-related motives.

The shooting happened between services as people were arriving for Spanish service, Osteen said. About 45,000 people attend services there every week, making it one of the largest megachurches in the country.

Osteen said he was “in a fog” after the violence and that he was keeping the injured in his prayers.

“We don’t understand why all these things happen,” the pastor told reporters Sunday. “But we know God’s in control.”

In a subsequent statement on Facebook, Osteen urged his congregation to lean on their faith to cope with anguish.

“Our community is devastated by today’s events and grateful for the swift actions of law enforcement,” he said. “Together, we will rise above this tragedy and stand firm in our commitment to love and support one another.”

Not mad at this one. Anybody who turns faith and spirituality into a commodity to be bought and sold deserves whatever divine intervention is coming to them. Joel Olestine and his churches are an absolute blight on the Christian faith and make a mockery out of thousands of sacred years of tradition. I guess he tore out the parts of the Bible about humility, generosity, reverance and compassion and kept the rest for his grift. Now he's gonna milk this tragedy because, despite the fact that Jesus humbly rode into Bethlehem on a donkey, atop palm leaves, he beleives stadium arenas are appropriate places of worship. That money should go towards helping others.

the worst offender so far has been this story. i didn't bother posting it before because it doesn't really have any new information, but the balls of the title. literally a possible motive and wonderment at what the motive could be right next to each other

Everyone jumping to the conclusion this is a pooner because the arrest record says "female" bear in mind the record also says "white nonhispanic" and this thing was born in El Salvador and is clearly some shade of brown. Granted it is legitimately ugly enough I can't tell what it is from the pics, but I lean towards MTF due to the nature of the ugliness and the fact that the Jeffrey name appears (so far- big asterisk) to have chronologically predated any feminine names.

Maybe we should go with the opposite of whatever the record says, that'd probably be more accurate.

This guy on Facebook has a chronology of aliases he found for the perp that suggests this was an MTF, I am leaning towards that opinion the more I look into this character:

The sense I'm getting is of a homosexual male prostitute type who trooned out, not of an Aiden. El Salvador has far more of the former than the latter, that's for sure. It also matches the profile of a MTF with a fetish for hijab/purdah in general.

Reports indicated that the shooter was female, but Moreno may have been male. Moreno was shot and killed by two off-duty officers. Moreno's weapon was emblazoned with the slogan "Free Palestine."
