Furry Fandom and Drama General

If search is to be believed, this guy could give some of these Furry weirdos a life lesson as he was in a long term monogamous relationship and presumably had that person at his side when he died.

I still remember, vividly; ConFurence 2001. I was walking into the dealer's den, and the guy checking membership badges at the door was Crassus Destanion; a notorious furry paedo (a fact which I did not know at the time) and the first thing I noticed about him is that he was wearing a small silver "Zeta" (zoophile symbol) pendant around his neck.

And yes, I can confirm; in the early furfag fandom, people were entirely open about it and talked about their dogfucking openly while in public among other furfags. Seeing a furfag wearing a zeta symbol was commonplace. The american server for the largest furry IRC chat network was hosted by a zoophile who was also a veterinarian.

Literally my first encounter with furfaggotry in the 1990's (and to note, the owner of that site was one of the few who stood up to the dogfuckers in the early furfag community, and told them to fuck off)

You're not thinking very hard because it's not just about words. That aside you can't even think of one thing? There's all kinds of things you could post or do on a website to cause someone real tangible harm.

It's a little disingenuous to compare Null to Merlino. It would be like if Null tried his hardest to chase off everyone but swatters, script kiddies and and people looking to do physical harm to lolcows. Plus for Farmers with blood on their hands we've got Couch Cuck, and the niggas that stole DSP's bank info and I think that's it. Most of the bad shit like swattings and unsubstantiated police reports that happens to Larson and Cyrax come from reddit. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Found a Reddit post from a few years ago with the dramatic title "The day the furry fandom died.", it does not at all paint a positive picture of Merlino.

The year was 1997, and the furry fandom was largely still family-friendly and heavily focused on anthropomorphic art and cartoons. However, the actions of Mark Merlino, one of the seminal figures in the development of the fandom, was causing this to change. According to allegations, the man wanted to add a sexual element to the subculture. To realize these dreams, he advertised the fandom in alternative sex communities and publications and distributed recruitment material filled with furry porn at sci fi gatherings. This brought an influx of people to the fandom who were more interested in using it to fulfill their sexual desires than they were in anthropomorphic cartoons.

Merlino had a house in Southern California that he promoted as a place for people in the furry fandom to gather. Eventually these gatherings left the Merlino's house and blossomed into a formal convention, the first dedicated furry convention in fact, called ConFurence.

By the time 1997 rolled in, the Confurence had been held seven times, and old-time furries were beginning to grow weary of the direction that Merlino was taking the subculture in. By the time ConFurence 8 was held, people were willing to speak up about their dissatisfaction with the sexual elements creeping into the subculture. The debauchery that occurred at ConFurence 8 confirmed and elevated their fears:
  • sexually explicit material and "alternative lifestyle" pamphlets in the Dealers' Room and Artist Alley
  • selling bootleg tapes
  • playing "freak the normals" with extreme displays of PDA
  • semen on the elevator wall
  • selling dates/companions (including at least one underage furry) in the "Pet Auction" with the expectation of sex while news crews filmed
  • LOTS of openly-worn bondage gear and underwear (see here and here)
  • public flogging in the hotel registration line
  • lapdances and simulated sex dancing
  • a security worker wearing drag
  • numerous fire hazards created by the con organizers
  • numerous alcohol law violations (selling without a license, selling to minors, open container)
  • high levels of drunkenness at the hotel (made the last con seem like a sobriety meeting according to an attendee)
Although some of these things are now commonplace at furry conventions, the happenings came as a shock to furries who had appreciated the previously family-friendly, cartoon-focused nature of the fandom. As such, they took to Usenet's alt.fan.furry, the biggest furry hub at the time, to report what they'd seen at the con and air their grievances:
Of course, as we all now know, they fought a losing battle. Merlino's influence cemented the sexual streak within the furry fandom, and the fandom is now strongly associated with sexual deviancy. As alternative lifestylers continued to flood the fandom, many of the original furries quit, and the subculture as we know it took shape.

Fun fact: Every one of the characters in Shawn Keller's animations were caricatures of real attendees of those conventions.

He released a full comic book called "Shawn Keller's Horrifying Look at the Furries"

That's what always boggled my mind and still does. That "everybody knows" a pedophile or zoophile, and it's just accepted. Like you had to walk around with this awkward feeling about people you saw or met. "Oh yeah, that's Faggot Bunny, he likes young guys lol", and thinking "Does he like... twinks or does he like kids..." kind of stuff. That seemed to be how most of furry went up until more recent times where people's antics could be publicized.

Back then? Unless you were out in the open about it, there was always a deniability that could be put out there. While places like the MUCKs had/have mods that would record and scan anything, if you did that and put out information about someone, then you'd be a pariah in the fandom. I guess it wasn't until the mid 2000s with stuff like Softpaw, that there was a general shift to keep that stuff well hidden.

Merlino's time? It was the wild west.

Reading about the guy, it’s interesting to go through the history of the furry fandom. Lots of nerds getting together.
