The Meaning of Malcolm X’s Death​

February 21, 2024 is the 59th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X. His life, political rhetoric, and death remain a growing source of misunderstanding about Black/White relations in the U.S. and even the global community. In recent years, much has been made of how two of the men convicted of his murder have been exonerated of the crime. The struggle to interpret this assassination 59 years later goes to the heart of an ideological battle between afro-pessmist and afro-idealist intellectual forces. Since the 1970s, afro-pessimist academics that construe Black people as victims have dominated American public discourse. The original “beloved community” espoused by leaders such as MLK and James Farmer Jr. has largely been pushed aside in favor of a more cynical discourse on race and even economic life in America.

Thomas Hagan has never denied his role in killing Malcolm X. He played a role in exonerating the other two men convicted of the killing. After serving more than 40 years for the murder, Hagan was released from a New York jail in 2010 that was now located on Malcolm X Boulevard. Malcolm X has come to represent the new pessimist path forward on race relations imagining that his aspirations for a more militant political praxis were the untried solution to anti-Black discrimination. In reality, Malcolm X was assassinated because of his conscious and deliberate movement away from the violent rhetoric of the Nation of Islam and toward a more moderate view of race struggle comparable to the mainstream movements like those embodied by King and Farmer.

Malcolm X’s longtime friend and debate sparring partner James Farmer Jr. discussed this reality in a 1987 lecture at Mary Washington University. Farmer explains that as a Muslim, X’s pilgrimage to Mecca revealed to him the outrageous falsehoods taught to him by Elijah Muhammad within the confines of the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X sent two postcards from Mecca to his friend James Farmer Jr., explaining his epiphany at uncovering the false teaching that only Black people worshipped at Mecca. The discovery that this was plainly untrue caused him in 1964 to become more deliberate in divorcing himself from the Nation of Islam. One week before his assassination and in one of his last public speeches on February 14 in Detroit, Malcolm X explained that he no longer believed in racial segregation and the radical ideology of NOI. Farmer had alerted him in 1962 that the Nation of Islam was activity conspiring with the American Nazi party to encourage racial segregation. Malcolm X’s effort to construct a moderate Muslim alternative to NOI remains important today.

I have a theory that the trend of converting to islam only stayed a thing among blacks post-Muhammad Ali/Malcolm X Era because of all of the special privileges afforded to muslims in prison, mainly concerning the special dietary restrictions and extra congregation time and other things during Ramadan. It is slightly more advantageous for you to be a muslim in an American penitentiary than to not be one, and trust me - they take every advantage they can get. If they applied that same logic to their professional lives they could actually do something instead of having all of their human rights taken away from them again and put back in chains.

what special privileges do they get? i only know they don't consume alcohol, shellfish and pork (which sounds like a con to me, not a pro, especially in jail where your diet is already limited and shitty, but oh well...), they get to not shave and pray once in a while... which is not something i imagine anyone cares about

Let's start with my state at least because it's the only one I can speak on for 100%. At all of the units in TX that I worked at, every time pork was on the menu, the muslims got a special meal which was usually baked chicken instead (since it was supposed to be a meat) AND it was always much fresher, since it was a smaller batch and cooked right at the end. the baked chicken tray was by far the best food possible aside from holiday meals. We had hog barn at my main unit and a pig farm at the unit across the river from it, so pork was served a LOT...and not just the juicy, delicious chops you may be thinking about. There were many gross pork dishes which I won't subject your mental taste buds to thinking about tasting. Even the pork chops we did get were some (most) times very dry and unappetizing.

As far as Ramadan is concerned, at the state level throughout America the General Population/non-seg inmates are allowed by law TONS of extra congregation time (mass group hangout basically), a few hours each day of Ramadan to "pray". I mean they don't "pray" at all, they just hang out and talk of course. It's basically a yearly business convention for most of them, with dozens of little "convict corporations" from all over the "world" (different blocks/buildings) getting together for a 2 hour meeting to talk business (betting, contraband, you name it...they are always into something) Definitely advantageous none of the other religions get such a privilege.

I am not 100% sure of the food situation in other prisons in America, but I am close to 99% sure. At least their alternate dish will be fresher most of the time. A lot of the time food in prison is a crapshoot, even if it is bad already. It can always be bad and old.

Was the heeb food better quality as well? I worked with a butcher who worked for a meat supplier back in the 1980s and 90s that supplied meat to prisons in Canada. He told me the heebs got the premium (((kosher))) stuff when it came to meats. And for being a criminal they got it all for free, he told me.

I have no idea because during my entire 10 years with the state I think I ran across maybe one or two jewish inmates. That could be because it was Texas but it's also just waaaay more common for them to commit federal crimes and therefore go to federal prison. As far as the internal converts, the vast majority of muslim conversions while institutionalized leads me to believe that the relative perks inside for converting to judaism are either slightly less or far less than equal to those relating to Islam. Otherwise you'd see it a lot more I feel like. I'm not sure I EVER remember delivering a "kosher" tray at any time, nor had any GP inmate come up to me and say, "I need to get off the block because I'm going to (x activity relating to judaism)". I don't think we even had any jewish "prayer groups" at any of the units I was ever at, or if there were I never knew about them.

Ah Malcom X, AKA Sean Kings's larping role model. Malcolm was an interesting person, he started life out a gay prostitute and general useless nog before converting to Islam in prison and becoming very preachy. I think a lot of it is that the only sub-Saharan African nations of historical note were the Muslim nations like Mali. Heck Mansa Musa is probably the only Black ruler of antiquity that anyone can actually name, and Blacks love him cuz that nigga stack dat money phat nowuimsayin’?


I guess Ethiopia is also notable as it was one of the First Nations to adopt Christianity, but later became a predominantly Muslim nation. They also get a weird sort of worship by black nationalists, with Rastafarians believing that one of the modern Ethiopian kings was the second coming of Christ. The worship largely comes from Ethiopia being one of the only African nations to have independence from European colonialism for most of the 19-20th centuries (only being briefly occupied by Italy before and during WW2).
