A couple of thoughts.
Jackie has a secret security clearance for the army because the US military now classifies everything. It's stupid and a waste. Foreigners can get secret clearance. The reason she needed this was to have access to vehicle manuals.
Her "high paying" job in Iraq was the same thing. She was a wheeled vehicle mechanic. In regards to her tax bill, a lot of contractors fucked this up. Your first say $98k of income is tax free if you classify as expat (the actual number is always increasing). A lot of people working overseas plan on this. The problem is that you have to do 330 days out of the country in a year. That sounds easy, but it's not. If you are a single day under, boom...full tax bill. So any unplanned return, say a funeral or wedding, it can really fuck you.
I could totally see a situation where jackster wasn't tracking her days closely and overran both years. And like most of the contractors in Iraq, she is a fucking train wreck and had already spent the cash.
Someone else in the thread mentioned that Jackie got a BCD/dishonorable discharge. That didn't happen. That takes a court martial and this would have made the Army Times at the very least. It's a felony conviction. It would have required Jackie to do prison time.
More likely, she got an article 15 and she received a general or an other than honorable discharge from her commanding officer. The OTH costs you your bennies, kicks you out early, but it wouldn't make the news cycle.
I wouldn't say it happens all the time, but it's mundane enough that unless you were at her command at the time, you would not hear about it. And the only direct evidence of it would be her DD214, which would list the nature of her discharge.
Since she never says what her discharge was, I personally lean to an OTH. She was probably the accomplished barrack lawyer and argued the CO into a negative discharge.

What's the point of getting custody when the child is not yours? It serves as a living monument of shame. To me this is just as bizarre as Fat giving up the parental rights to his biological daughter. In fact I'd rather be in Fat's situation if I had to choose, because at least he has managed to pass on his genes, as subhuman as they are, while this guy will spend the rest of his life raising a half-ogre child of some unknown guy his ex-wife cucked him with.
