Modafinil is meant to be taken right when you wake up, so that it can combat sleep apnea an hour later. Usually the effects can last between 12 to 17 hours. Not to go full chemist mode, but the drug itself has an interesting background. Originally the creators made it to be "Adderall lite" but because of laws, it meant that you needed a shit load of prescriptions and having to jump through doctors to even get it. So instead they've labeled it as a way to fight off sleeping disorders, even though you still needed an prescription, it was easier to get.

This is all from memory, so I could be wrong.

I'm no chemist, but anecdotally, modafinil kind of just makes you feel less 'drunk' when you're drinking - you lose your inhibitions but still feel as though you're in control of yourself, I guess because there's something counteracting the depressive effects of the alcohol. Same goes for adderal/ritalin, etc.

The problem is that this feeling of being in control leads you to drink way past your limit. Then, when the stimulant effects wear off with out warning, the full extent of your drinking comes crashing home and before you know it you're absolutely fucking munted.
