Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

Modern phones are a fucking tragedy. Massive folding glass bricks with a crease in the middle and no removeable battery or headphone jack why the fuck would I want that????

I once bitched about the lack of a headphone jack to someone and that retard had the audacity to tell me that "oh well have you ever taken a look at a schematic for phones? those things take so much power" WHY CAN MY MP3 PLAYER LAST DAYS ON A SINGLE FUCKING DOUBLE A THEN FAGGOT I seriously hope these people kill themselves.

As for size thing, in these last two years I've went from an iPhone 4 (perfect size for my hand it was great) to a pixel 1 and since the flash storage on that died a while ago I am currently using a Huawei P Smart 2019.

This chink piece of shit is so fucking huge it's ridiculous and Huawei in all their fucking wisdom decided that the notification center and control panel should be opened on different sides of the notch (a retarded design choice I don't care what those apple faggots tell me it's so fucking stupid just copy the Galaxy S9 you stupid fucking retard hippie money wasting faggots) and the size of the phone makes that extra annoying.

The new foldable shit as well is so stupid to me, flip phones are cool and I'd like to get this Japanese one which should work in my country (and hey, it runs Android and has stuff like NFC and a touch screen just in case because Android is not really intended to be used with physical buttons) but the stuff Samsung and the like are making are horrible. Folding tablets it's ridiculous, I have no need for this fucking display size on a phone or a crease in the middle of that display on my extremely expensive phone.

And let we not forget that they are all made out of glass now, drop it and enjoy your cracked screen, child.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is peak smartphone IMO. Nice, compact but clear screen, removable battery, micro sd slot, and a headphone jack. The industry has strayed from the light.

Most phones are too big for me, though I understand smaller smartphones wouldn't fit the real world usage of most people.

I'm still using my Wiko Goa and feel no incentive to switch. It fits in my pocket next to my wallet, it does its job as a phone, and it still works in a pinch for typical smartphone stuff like checking mails or playing media, though I typically use another device (Odin Lite) as my Swiss army knife.

The only "upgrade" I could possibly want is a flipphone with a physical keyboard, but running Android and still having a touchscreen.

Turns out my version of Gimp does open .webp, I was just trying to open a file in it that must have been corrupted or something. Good to know at least.

On the note of modern search engines being almost fucking worthless thanks to SEO and AI generated nonsense word salad, another thing I hate is having to append fucking "reddit" to just about every search I do about home improvement/repairs or technical information because otherwise I'll just get a hundred results that are sites trying to tell me to just hire someone to do it, sites with AI generated word salad that gives a very basic outline of shit I already knew, etc. I fucking hate having to use Reddit because Reddit sucks but it's about the only website that will reliably show up in search results that MAY have relevant information on certain subjects. And even then the threads you do find are often: "hire someone to do it it's too dangerous to do yourself!" because Redditors are a bunch of pussies. Seriously, replacing a fucking ceiling fan requires an electrician? It's two fucking bolts, a couple nuts and three, maybe four fucking wires. Pop the appropriate circuit closed on the breaker box and get to it, you ain't gonna die.

I honestly do not give a fuck about fidelity at low bitrates. I care about fidelity at "high but not too high" bitrates. If you can name a format that is quality-equivalent to 320 kbps cbr mp3 and just as compatible with all the different software and hardware I use my 320 kbps cbr mp3 files for, be my guest.
But I do not give a single fuck about codec comparisons that deal with anything lower than 320 kbps cbr mp3.
AAC at 192 Kbps in m4a or AAC is supported by almost every device nowadays. As mentioned, even many feature phones from 2006 with an SD card slot supported AAC.

You could also use WAV I guess. It will play on an original IBM PC with a Soundblaster. And it has better fidelity than even mp3 so...

I had the SII, S3, S4, and S5 and they were all great phones with Cyanogen/Lineage.

The AMOLED display on the S5 was really nice to look at. I only stopped using that phone because it got too slow for the apps I was running on it, and the NAND was severely degraded.

Caterpillar sells something like that. People say it's a huge piece of shit though.

What's the maximum sample size and rate that will play back without dropped frames on an IBM PC?
Why do I have to sign up?

I miss video games providing server software alongside the game by default with the assumption of the average user being competent enough to figure things out themselves. Sure, it was a hassle to go through the typical port forwarding procedure and getting the server to connect to the Internet by trial and error, but at least that guaranteed that the game would be playable online way into the future indefinitely.

I don't know whether that could have been anticipated back then but with LAN tunnelers, LAN is among the most future-proof ways that old games may be played online nowadays. A very good online service is still vulnerable to be abandoned, a game with LAN only needs to run on your OS.

Sometimes Yandex still gives useful results. Sometimes.

As much as the sound card and the ISA slot allows LMAO. Uncompressed audio is much easier to decode than compressed. At the most simplest application you're just copying data to a DAC at a fixed rate.

Governments charging extra fees/taxes on cars, based on engine displacement, in addition to tightening fuel economy regulations, have led some auto makers to go way too far with using 2.0T engines with Hybrid systems, resulting in combinations that seem extremely Rube Goldberg-esque. The 2025 Mercedes-AMG GLC63S E Performance is one of the worst offenders of this.

Gonna quote myself about this, as the sedan version, the Mercedes-AMG C63S E Performance, has this same powertrain, and it turns out to be so Rube Goldberg-esque, that even a diagram for the powertrain is complicated:

C&D only managing to get 17 MPG with that car, in addition to the 4700+ lb curb weight, making it just as heavy as some SUVs and EVs, goes to show how car makers lost their way, and how stifling government regulations on fuel economy and displacement sizes are getting.
