I agree. And I'll clarify what I meant: a family with poor parenting, is obviously a poor family in a way.

And I didn't even say this as an insult. I have no comment about the ideal level of wealth a family should have, in fact my hot take is that it's better to be more impoverished than not at all. My upbringing is financially-poor as well and I wouldn't have had it any other way. I'll remember to be extra clear and based about this next time.

I said this a while back when "the decline" was starting - I even caught some mean stickers over it.

At the time I was writing it, I was thinking of how the audience turned on Ethan Ralph, but I think the highlighted part was why a lot of people considered him an E-Daddy.

He "wasn't a cow" because he was saying stuff you agreed with, and kept his weird stuff hidden. People will dismiss some of your weirdness when you charm them by saying the right things. The way he was pausing as he spoke on stuff could be taken as he was picking his words carefully to remain neutral, but it gave the impression he may have been hiding something.

The moment they grow tired or suspicious, they start to nit-pick until they find something.

one can certainly overcome the odds of bad parenting with good siblings or any other virtue. But it's far from ideal, it's a handicap. It's likely to lead to some deficiency in character because anybody anywhere primarily learns about love and obligation through their parents, and you don't like being implicated. My father had a trashy upbringing too and he related to me that he learned to love through his in-laws, who treated him like their own child while his own blood never did any such thing. That's something to feel sorry for, sorry.

What floors me, as someone who grew up with addict parents, is how anyone who’s lived through it could shrug off the impact it will have on the kids.

It’s difficult to relate to a mindset that would hand-wave away the effects of having alcoholic, neglectful parents. I always thought anyone who’d had a similar experience to mine wouldn’t wish it on their worst enemies. (Even in AA, which like any niche subculture is rife with infighting and vitriol, there’s an unspoken understanding that while you may want your now-sober enemies to fucking die, you’d never wish for them to relapse.)

Childhood fucking sucked for many of us, precisely because of parents similar to Nick and Kayla. It’s both infuriating and devastating to be held hostage by two addicts whose next fix is a higher priority than the best interests of their children. But because neglected kids are overwhelmingly likely to minimize their own pain and blame themselves for everything, it can take decades to get an accurate self-assessment of what it was really like. That journey to acceptance is avoidably extended by well-meaning but unenlightened strangers saying there’s nothing to feel sorry for just because you were neglected by the people who were supposed to be your chief protectors.

ETA: Just realizing the above probably applies to Nick “Kids only care about Disney World, not if mom’s on onlyfans” Rekieta. God knows that even as older people his parents still look like they LOVE to “party.”
