Not a legal guy, but sentences in Canada are not handed out immediately. typically in Canadian courts, the verdict is given out, then a process is done to determine the best sentence for the convicted (It can also be considered a window to appeal the decision) this includes stuff like checking if the convicted is a native etc.

Bank tellers always take it seriously no matter the robber. It is longstanding policy. Look at Red Rountree, a man who robbed banks in his 80's and 90's with just an envelope with "Robbery" written on it. If a bank teller tries to be a "hero" and stop a robbery they are almost invariably fired.
