For anyone curious about how these things work at Big 5 in terms of robbery here's a rundown:

The most common type of robbery scenario is exactly what is described here. Note passer. Bandit hands a note demanding cash to a teller.

The other types are Verbal Demand, Verbal Demand with Displayed Weapon and Armed Takeover. This list does not include things like after hours vault attacks and opening team takeovers.

Procedure for all live robbery types are simple: You comply with the instructions given by the bandit. I am not aware of anyone still using holdup or panic alarms anymore. Not in retail banking settings.

In the example I am familiar with this involves going and pulling a specified amount of cash from the Cash Dispenser (think ATM but for bank tellers, they have to swipe a card and have limits on what they can withdraw). This cash is mixed in with a decoy unit, which is a stack of cash hollowed out and fitted with a dye pack or GPS pack. This stack of real cash mixed with decoy is given to the bandit, typically in a plastic bag to maximise the effectiveness of the dye pack going off.

The objective is to get the bandit out of the branch as quickly as possible. Once they pass through the threshold of the main doors the dye pack or GPS is activated. Branch staff lock the doors behind them and immediately contact their security operations centre who take over the process of contacting law enforcement, obtaining footage of the suspect, notifying regional contacts including HR counselors and regional security investigators. An initial briefing package would go out to police and the security committee of the Canadian Banking Association within about half an hour including all suspect footage.

Most of these people don't get caught because even with great footage of the robbery if you can't ID the person you can't ID the person. So this idiot fucked up big time. Probably wasn't counting on the GPS pack in the decoy.

Retail banks in Canada are robbed this way several times a day. I know of branches that would get hit several times a week. The objective from a corporate security standpoint was to control losses, control risk of violence and make hitting the branch as unprofitable as possible for the bandit. Typical score was under 500 bucks, mostly ruined by dye.

In short this guy is a fucking idiot. Crackheads rob banks daily in this country and manage to never get caught. I know of guys who took banks for hundreds of thousands per year and didn't bother wearing a mask. You have to be a serious fuck up to get caught or already known to either law enforcement or the bank.

I wouldn't recommend attempting to rob a retail bank during business hours at all. What you are going to learn from it is that it's a waste of time from a risk/reward standpoint. I find it odd that he was able to rob a bank 20 minutes after it closed. It's not like that location has a place to hide. I think the time given is probably when he left the building and he was the last person in line. Banks try and get everyone out the door about 10 minutes before closing so they can check things and leave at 7:30.
