You could say Sonic CD was the first sign of trouble, and that was immediately after Sonic 1.
I'd say the first sign of trouble was even outside of video games. Keep in mind, 1993 saw the year of both DiC cartoons, one being the syndicated, more-comedic AoSTH and the other being ABC's Saturday morning SatAM

Since he's an Aussie, the local national newspaper shilled Whitehead's new game release.

Melbourne game developer Christian Whitehead has an unusual claim to fame; for more than a decade, he’s helped Japanese icon Sega bring its classic Sonic the Hedgehog games to new platforms, and even lead the development on an original and critically celebrated Sonic Adventure. [Emphasis added - P]
...
With Evening Star formed shortly afterwards, Whitehead said the shift from working on one of the world’s most recognisable series to being creative director of a new studio was a profound one.

“It’s absolutely freeing, and therein lies the challenge. A property holder will typically tell you what you can and can’t do with the characters, lore, even down to specific emotions or colour usage. But with an original property, all these elements need to be discovered and defined for the dev team to maintain a cohesive vision,” he said.
There's nothing really new with regards to Sonic in this piece. It's about Penny's Big Breakaway, not an expose on Sega and the Sonic brand.

Q&A attached. Gee, maybe you should've delayed it for a few weeks. That way, you wouldn't have been competing with Wonder, and the game would've gotten some much-needed polish. Win-win. But of course that's too much to expect from SEGA. *sigh*
Funny how Mario Wonder’s sales didn’t suffer from Superstars being released three days earlier. It’s almost like Superstars is just a much worse game and they don’t want to openly admit it.

This was apparently leaked last month

Gameplay sent to Insider Gaming under the condition that the footage does not go public and the source remains anonymous and shows various Sonic characters battling it out in 32-player matches. Sonic, Tales, Shadow, Knuckles, Eggman, Amy, Metal, and more can all be seen competing in obstacle courses and fighting against bosses, where the last player wins. Some matches require players to race to the finish, collect rings, or simply just to survive to the end.

Gold rings seemingly play a vital part in the game’s cosmetics, where they will go towards unlocking chests that include new costumes, emoji buddles (displays above the character’s head), dances, trails, emotes, and more.

All they had to do was replace the characters with Chao and tack on a chao raising sim, and then Sonic fans would be excited. My guess is that this will go the way Sonic Runners Adventure did.

Completed Knuckles Chaotix yesterday. Its not that bad of a game, the ring mechanic isn't that bad, its actually fun with how janky it can be.

The levels were a bit garish though. It's as if they tried to use every single colour in the 32x palette and all the levels merged into psychadelic slop.

Five acts per stage is a bit much, too.

There is apparently a Chao game coming to Netflix of all things called "Chao Guardians". Get it? Like garden? Sonic Team continues to innovate and delight.

Considering Aaron Webber was brought on as some sort of consultant for the Sonic War Forces script, as per the leak of that script that is being hoarded by fan translator/leaker Windii, the scope of what Sonic social media managers do might be much broader than what the role normally entails.
The Sonic Wars script table? I know how that got leaked, an intern overshared in the Big's Big Fishing Adventure 3 server on Discord years ago. The comments in question are marked "AW".

Here's the file, the password is "perfectchaos". The script that Windii wrote is her own translation of the dialogue in the M column.

Webber's attempt to appeal to Game Grumps fans Arin Hanson by forcing Big the Cat truly has been a disaster for the Sonic brand. I can make some guesses as to who that intern may've been, given there's some high-profile fans who've publicly stated they did internships with SEGA around that time.
