The average follow-up period is 6 years, so that's a 0.06% decrease in suicide risk per year for the hormone-treatment group. This would mean 1 (one!) fewer suicide per 294 people given hormones after 6 years.

Imagine if you went to a doctor for depression, and he said "We can perform surgery to amputate one of your fingers, and it will reduce your chance of suicide by 0.06% every year. When do you want to book the procedure?" You'd tell him to fuck off and then call the police.

For a long time we've known that gender affirming care (GAC) lowers suicidality.

Imagine you have a dataset of trans people getting GAC and those not, and you have more suicides in those not.

Self harm and suicide attempts lead to suicide crisis care visits, both of which are connected to suicide.

So you are measuring a tautology! The variable you are measuring, suicide, is also heavily contained in "psych visits"

When you try, as this model did, to "control" for psychiatric visits, you are over-controlling and measuring a tautology - you're measuring something that is implicitly connected to suicide, DEEPLY so, REGARDLESS of whether you get care.

And you lose all signal from "care."

I won't go over the details, but Tony's contention is that trans-identified people have worse mental health because they're not given the treatments they desire. This is not something Tony can actually show, he just insists it's true. It is particularly funny because every time anyone has proposed that the first-line treatment for trans-identification be psychotherapy, Tony has denounced it as "transphobic" gatekeeping. Surprise, the solution is to give trans-identified people whatever pharmaceutical and surgical treatments they wish.

I will pick on this bit though:

There's several problems with Tony's claim that the authors buried this finding:

• The objective of the paper was "to examine all-cause and suicide mortalities in gender-referred adolescents and the impact of psychiatric morbidity on mortality", not to look at the difference between those who received hormonal treatment and those who did not.
• There were (thankfully) only 7 suicides in both GR- (no hormones) and GR+ (hormones) combined, greatly limiting our ability to say anything concretely about the difference between the two groups. We also don't know the split between them.
• We don't have sufficient information on the difference between the GR- and GR+ groups in order to suggest that the reason for any difference in suicide rates is hormonal treatment. (SEGM suggests the GR- group may have had worse mental health, due to doctors' preference to put the more mentally stable patients on hormonal treatment. We cannot know either way from the paper.)
• The confidence intervals signficiantly overlap, and the p value for the GR+ group is 0.8(!!!). With the data we have, it is entirely possible that the GR- group had a lower suicide rate than the GR+ group. These figures just don't allow us to make conclusions with much degree of certainty.

I've said this before, but Tony is painting a fantasy world for his followers (and, I suspect, for himself). They've created a belief system for themselves that is more and more at odds with reality. They can keep telling themselves that the road they're on stretches out as far as the eye can see, but if they don't reckon with that cliff edge they'll go straight over it and the landing will be brutal.

More generally, Tony has decided to live in a world in which:

• People whose gendered soul does not match the expectations associated with their sex are being targeted for annihilation.
• These gendered souls have always existed in human history, and there has been a millennia-long cover-up of their existence.
• Pharmaceuticals invented over the past century and surgeries invented over the past 50 years are required to prevent people with mismatched gendered souls from killing themselves en masse.
• Every scientific paper that disagrees with this course of treatment is the product of stupidity, malice, or both.

The same politicians who are banning gender-affirming care for trans people have passed abortion bans. This is the same fight, fought by the same people, for the same purpose. Abortion bans and gender-affirming care bans are all about control. Those responsible for these laws do not want us to have control over our own bodies. It doesn't matter to them that this is essential healthcare.

Trans and abortion care are often life-saving. Twenty-two states have enacted bans on trans care, and bans have ended all or some abortions in 21 states. What is a person who needs gender-affirming care supposed to do when the only treatment option available is banned? What is a person with a non-viable pregnancy supposed to do when the state won't even let a doctor intervene?

Department of Education Office of Civil Rights announces investigation into Owasso Public Schools over trans teen Nex Benedict’s death. #trans #transgender #lgbtq #transrights

This just in: The Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights has announced an investigation into Owasso Public Schools over the death of transgender teenager Nex Benedict. This comes in response to a complaint filed by the Human Rights Campaign, alleging a widespread pattern of abuse, harassment, and bullying that was documented towards Nex Benedict as a result of his gender identity. We also learned that this is likely happening not just in Owasso Public Schools, but in public schools all over Oklahoma.

A separate complaint alleges that Superintendent Ryan Walters has engaged in a pattern of discrimination towards trans and LGBTQ students in the state. Now, this investigation is going to look at Title IX and Title II complaints, as well as Section 504 complaints. And should the Department find against Owasso Public Schools or the Superintendent, penalties could be severe.

This is also one of the most significant federal investigations into discrimination on transgender students. There are many more complaints that are out there, not just towards the school, but also towards the police system there. We may see, for instance, the announcement of a Department of Justice investigation into the handling of Nex Benedict's death.

At any rate, the complaint alleges that Nex suffered due to anti-trans laws in the state of Oklahoma, and in fact also alleges that Nex first was bullied after the bathroom ban in Oklahoma took effect. Hopefully this successfully leads to justice for Nex Benedict.
