It starts off badly, but mostly because the sheer incompetence of the characters is staggering to the point of breaking immersion. The first contact squad are pathetically unprepared (not like they have generations of Federation training to base their contact procedure on) with one of them being genuinely detrimental to the entire mission, while the other is this 'smooth talker' who folds immediately in negotiations and gets a load of people killed through pure idiocy. Which would've been okay, if he was presented as anything other than a competent worker by SP. However, SP's hyping up of chapter 11 paid off, as it's when things begin to kick into gear.
