For those of you who are secretly underage B& or were born in the 2000s, the 1990s was the crux of when the internet was about to get into the mainstream but was about the last decade when people were actively going out and did stuff outside, and there was a lot of anticipation for the next millennium and wonder over where mankind and civilization would go next. When it comes to shit like children's boot camps, this was often the clash of the generation gap. This meant actual culture war infighting, like the close grasp of corporate work life (ie the original boomer wagies) into the nuclear family, religious paranoia about how Y2K is the Coming of the Beast and how all of Morality In Media needed to censor every episode of Beavis and Butthead or else Baby Jesus would deny them their 72 virgins at the pearly gates, and what to do about a world that is becoming more materialistic by the day, versus the encouragement and empowerment of youth being the future of mankind, figuring out other ways to live on earth without causing our own self destruction, and resisting the more abusive powers that be. There are some other things I'm likely missing, but that's most of what I've got.

For some of youth worse off and not knowing what to do or with proper outlets, they got the short end of the stick (ie boot camps). If you think Ramona Flowers ruined an entire generation of women, so did corporate greed and destroying the family dynamic for money and the idea that progress is infinite under delusional idealism. Parents failing to rear their kids is often what gets them into trouble in the first place.

Well said. In many ways, the "troubled teen industry" was just pre-internet, end-stage liberalism running its course, and indeed it took the internet to connect everyone together so we could realize how fucked up it was and try to stop it.

WWASPS did something that was in many ways worse. Completing the circle, someone from the more businessy side of the human potential movement fork of Synanon, David Gilcrease, was a "Lifespring" trainer who developed the WWASPS model of control and WWASPS Seminars. Lifespring did what is called "LGATs", that is, Large-Group Awareness Training. Looking into this can be expansive, and looking into William Erhard's shit is worth a few documentaries in itself, but instead I'll just talk about what WWASPS did to kids under the tutelage of Gilcrease:

• Dehydration and exhaustion from 18 hour marathons with few bathroom breaks, barely any water, and constant physical exertion.
• Every single personal detail known about every child there was twisted to be used against them, even the death of a parent who died when the child was a toddler or infant or otherwise completely out of the child's control - they would be forced to admit guilt in front of everyone.
• Every child was profiled by the program and made to wear signs that would hurt them the most. The Netflix doc talks about "trashy mistake" and such; victims of sexual assault were literally labeled "slut", and worse.
• The mind games got worse as exhaustion set in more. One of the least bad ones was "nine dots" where you were told to 'think outside of the box' after being a completely controlled drone in a cult and mocked and screamed at while sobbing and trying to draw a line through the 3x3 grid.
• The worst one that anyone remembers is called "lifeboat." In lifeboat, after your mind had completely lost itself, soft music was played and you were made to pretend you were on a ship and relaxing. They would then make very loud noises, throw chairs, turn on the lights as bright as they could, and force the children to pick only three people out of the hundred or more who were allowed to survive by making them individually stand on a chair and beg to live and justify their life, after being torn down for multiple days, and too tired to think, as every other child and staffer shouted "Die!" in their face. They would then of course do it to everyone else.
• To make boys "vulnerable" since they couldn't be as often beat up for surviving sexual assault or being hurt by being called a slut, they were often made to dress in drag.
• Boys and girls (dressed the same...) would be made to perform dances, in costume and makeup, to music. Right Said Fred's "I'm too sexy" and "Santa Baby" were included, and sexual assault victims dressed in 90s or 00s Christmas slut costumes lap dancing on male laps was widely reported.

Debatable, maybe it does for some but it broke here. It's not as fast, but as a backup, use archive.is, and vice versa whenever it doesn't work. Archive.is functioned here when ghost failed. And if you have the space to save these things locally, even though it's not as reliable as proof cause you can edit it then, something like httrack is incredibly useful as you can download entire websites to your pc, works better for older stuff but still.

Never rely on archive.org/the wayback machine, they are compromised. It was found years ago that they'd wiped their archives of Kiwifarms, even though that's supposed to only be something that's done when someone asks unless it's explicitly illegal content. They appeared to admit publicly they weren't actually committed to just being an archiving service in 2020. They've got an entire forum for people to ask for archived content to be removed, and at a minimum they're still withheld to the DMCA which has been used to strike content off of the site itself.

I also have to gripe again at how fucking SOFT they handled the seminars. They barely scratched the fucking surface - but that's from my POV. That said, the insane seminars have become quite capitalized. Big businesses would do this for "corporate trainings" and "corporate retreats" in the 90s, not sure if that petered out or when it really declined. 1. a while back, I was looking into Mormon connections to Las Vegas because of the FBI lore I'd casually stumbled across; there's a weird relationship between Jews and Mormons, in that they both refer to the rest of humanity as "gentiles," and one can make a case that both the casino world/LV and FBI [those who would be investigating federal vice] are ruled by a Jewish capstone with Mormon soldiers.

Excellent and horrifying OP. Like many non-americans i heard about that industry first via Paris Hilton (also that comic dude on leddit) talking about it some years back. It's mindboggling that something like this exists and on what a grand scale. I'm completely honest when i say i would most likely kill my parents if they ever sent me to something like that.
All i can add is that i know that Synanon is still very present here in Germany, albeit operating completely uncultlike from my brief experience with them. They are pretty much doing the same thing AA is doing, offering meetings, sober-living facilities and sober jobs, for lack of a better term, in the low-pay sector, i know they have a moving company and second-hand bookstores where they stick benefit claimants from the Jobcentre and the like. Also sending representatives to detox clinics to hold meetings, that is how i first became aware of them. I am not sure how the operation is funded, probably half taxpayer, half charity.
They did operate cult-like, albeit in a more esoteric, new age kind of way and not how stuff in the US was going down, in the 80´s and early 90´s when the heroin epidemic was ravaging the country (comparable to the crack epidemic in the US in the same timeframe), potential members had to shave their head, wether male or female, and it was a lot of unpaid labour, members living in barracks, vegan meals and all that shit.
Lots of content ITT is quite hard to stomach and i am happy to see a light is getting shone on things outside of the Farms via that Netflix docu (which i most likely won't be able to watch, it's just too fucking grim) and the like. Everyone involved needs to hang in double-quick time, especially that Narvin whateverlastname piece of shit.
