Diseased #Comicsgate - The Culture Wars Hit The Funny Books!

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
The big game changing moment for creator owned IP in comics was of all things Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Many times over generations IP that has sold toys, done cartoons, movies, clothes and other assorted things to buy with a ninja turtle on it. No connection to DC or Marvel, just two guys who came up with something as a laugh. You never know what is going to capture the imagination of the masses. There were many attempts to reverse engineer TMNT and they all paled in comparison. There's nothing wrong with expansion if there's demand. Over saturation and generic creative vision born out of greed lead to nonsense like Ant-Man 3 by contrast.

He wants to be Todd Mcfarlane.

He'd never be a McFarlane. But I think he really screwed up any momentum with those things because of how slow he is getting his books out. Myself, I hate geek knickknacks. If I'm going to buy a toy, it will be so I can give it to my kid so me and him can play with. And I wouldn't buy a $40+ toy for that no matter how cool it might look. But he could have probably been able to do really well with the toys if he was able to pump out 1-3 comics every year or two with a release cycle of 6-10 months maybe. Wouldn't even need to do 40-50 page comics. Just sell 15-25 page floppies or something at a lower price.

Good point. Maybe for Tubi where the Soskas have a deal?

This is exactly where that attitude comes from, Richard C Meyer's videos. It comes off as an attempt to create virtue in mediocrity and lack of ambition.
When Meyer said it it was a critique of the trend for the past 30 years of how American comics became a refuge for failed/aspiring Hollywood screenwriters along with editorial edicts to make comics resemble movie storyboards in the hopes of getting picked up for adaptation, resulting in a lot of boring, shitty, "decompressed" comics. Which was a retarded idea from the get go because Hollywood execs naturally just chose good comics to have their top screenwriters adapt into movies instead of bothering with shit comics trying to resemble movies. It's not that getting a comic adapted into a movie is bad, it's the observable shift of the medium towards optimizing comics for maximum movie optioning appeal at the expense of the comic itself that's bad.

The exception to the failures are the guys like Mark Millar or Joss Whedon - very established Hollywood figures - they can pay out of pocket to bang out storyboard comics on the cheap by guys like Cliff Richards, relying on their networking connections to get it optioned for a film rather than the quality of the artist. Then some youtuber sees "artist for Joss Whedon" and here we are.

Frog actually recommended the idea of Isom being adapted as a movie during the infamous Flashcast stream before things exploded, only for July to testily anger that "that's something you'd do but that's not what I'm thinking about".

Hasn't that been Dick and Vito's stated goal for a few years now?
See: "failed hollywood screenwriter"

Eric dropped Yaira and it's already almost at half a million

good lord, these culture war paypigs will shell out an obscene amount of money on this garbage. don't get me wrong, i respect that EJ can at least get his stuff out on time, but i have yet to see a culture war comic (CG or otherwise) that doesn't look like a generic pile of garbage. If you showed me a photo of almost any character from any of these books and told me it was the mascot of a dentist office I'd believe you.

I might be remembering wrong, but wasn't the "something you'd do" part more about EVS just selling the IP to be made by someone versus Eric wanting to have full control?

That does sound more accurate. From what I’ve seen, Eric is adamant about not selling his IP off to people to fuck with.

MacFarlane doesn't burn bridges with people and make himself look like a victim. There's a reason why he's the main distributor of DC toys.

Yeah. Eric said if he was going to make a game or movie he'd hire people to do it in house.
He also said there has to be a demand. So far he hinted at entering the toy/statue game.

More empty promises from the Emperor of Comics. He could own EJ, but he's lazy and incompetent "it's just not time yet."

He must've forgotten already doing it for CF2:

Of course he didn't pay anybody for that, it was supposedly a freebie that he played multiple times every stream.

I do remember him checking out a site that sold custom collectibles on one of his streams and he was surprised at the apparently low pricing they offered then he was expecting for the toys they had. Those guys most likely have good manufacturing contracts, but he was probably looking into that or something similar if he was serious. I wish I could remember the site he used besides it having a black/orange background because I ain't a toy guy and have no idea if they were actually good quality or not.

I know! And it is driving Ethan simps CRAZY on Twitter! And the sad thing is, I know some of these people and they are both good people and talented creators; they're just in a vicious state of denial. But as EJ's success grows and @FROG's diminishes, they'll eventually come around. There's always going to be a few hold-outs who insist the ship is still sailing when it's sinking.

EVS only needed to crowdfund his first book. With those proceeds he could've pre-produced everything else going forward and done exactly the same thing EJ is. We even suggested that but he told us we were crazy to think he should risk his own money instead of yours going forward. He spent it and yours on himself instead and now can't afford to print and ship the products everyone paid for. Now he's an IBS drama streamer.
This is the flaw Ethan can’t realize. The saying goes: “You have to spend money to make money.” You have to put your money at risk in order to create a business. That’s why people take out loans for houses and businesses. That gives them more motivation to do their best. Amazon had a billion dollar deficit for almost a decade before they started making a profit. If you’re not risking anything of yours, you’re obviously not going to put in much effort.

Some black dude really has turned these people into mush brained tribal retards more than ever...

"Thank god you didn't film a trailer with live action for probably a small amount of money to make your comic interesting... Thank GOD you resorted to the rest of the same old shitty trailers that always come out with these campaigns."
