Jail is lower security prison, often run by the county, for people convicted of low level shit like drunk driving. Prison is for higher offenses but the terms are often used interchangeably.

jail is local (county) and is where you generally are stuck until trial and sentencing-- as well as where you serve shorter sentences for lesser charges. prison (which is state or federal) is only for people who've been convicted. usa jails are full of people who haven't been convicted, only charged, but who can't afford pre-trial bail.

jail is where patrick goes for threatening to kill his wife and child, prison is where stalkers go to enjoy.

You can be remanded to prison even before conviction in very specific cases (usually for your protection or because they can’t contain you safely).
