The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

There are spots where it's clear they've layered different pictures from the same shoot together to make a "perfect" version. This has apparently prompted people to dive down schizophrenic rabbitholes, where they insist that Kate is actually dead because her face looks the same from the same angle in different pictures.
pffff

(please remember that this is a woman who was posing for the media six hours after giving birth after a difficult pregnancy)
True, but she's 10+ years older now, and her health and stamina have probably declined with age, especially if she has Crohn's disease. I'd be very shocked if this is all a huge cover up for something aside from Charles' health.

She's hardly decrepit, she just turned 42 and was never known to have dire health issues before. A bowel resection is a serious surgery but there's no reason that she couldn't have been staged for a flattering photo and a "thanks for the well wishes" tweet were she conscious and/or willing.

Charles, meanwhile, continues to get photographed, share stuff to social media, and make (albeit short) appearances. Camilla was photographed multiple times visiting him in the hospital and they left together, whereas Will only did so once despite Kate's much longer stay and she was not photographed leaving. The situation is very weird and doesn't speak to a PR department that has things under control.

If you have a large bowel movement to make today I highly recommend this article, which goes in depth into how palace PR works and how negative press is quashed. If you don't want to read the interview (though it's worth it IMO), scroll down for a timeline explaining just how bad all of this looks.

Don't some phones (the newest Pixel I think?) do that automatically?

They take a burst of like 5 photos and combine what the programming makes the best looking photo.

Maybe, but that's not the case here. The Guardian looked at the photo's metadata and found that it went through several rounds of Photoshop. What's more, someone on TikTok discovered that the outfits in the photo were identical to those Kate and the kids wore to an event back in November. The only major differences were in the color of Kate's sweater (though not the distinctive cut, and anyway changing the color of a single element in the photo is like the first thing you learn in Photoshop tutorials) and Charlotte's skirt, which is where many of the digital fuckery seems to have happened.

Realistically, even if Kate dies, it's not a big deal (from a public perception angle). She's had the heirs, and performed her duties admirably. William seems to truly care for her and the children, so he's certainly not going to be seen in a negative light like his father was.
The "grieving widower" angle will only increase his standing, and as long as he doesn't remarry within a short time he'll be very highly regarded by the public.

Having said that, it all sounds like conspiracy sperging to me.

if the Kate rumors are true though, Harry GTFO of the UK and the Firm may be the one thing that saves the Monarchy. William could not become King in this scenario and would have to abdicate his position in favor of George. This would mean Harry would become Regent until George comes of age.

And since he would literally be the one senior Royal with absolutely no stink on him because of this hypothetical, he would be uniquely placed to actually get the family through what would otherwise be a Dynasty ending legitimacy crisis.

A surgery ain't the same as childbirth, though. Your body is meant to recover quickly from it because you need to take care of your baby.

We're just thinking too much into this. Maybe Kat doesn't want to be seen sick?
