I think the Alyx VR game is the only one in the time period where they could have.

Incidentally Alyx as a character in HL2 is a perfect example of how you can have a mixed-race character who isn't a total stereotype and is actually useful.

The best part is, from what I heard their 1 year exclusives are kinda backfiring too. Because they're now Steam's glorified beta testers. Just, without a chance for constructive criticism... because you know, Epic is anti consumer. FF7 Remake was horrid pc port on release (And still is? as a loyal fan I have my... distrusts.. Fuck Tim Swiney, fuck his little crusade against every monopoly that isn't his, and fuck his game engine, it's shit and it's another cancer that's taking over the game industry, but maybe after Unity's fuckup Godot will become the Blender of game engines, where the proprietary solutions were so shit, the industry invested into the development of the FOSS project and it became the go-to.

I recommend going for Heroic, mainly cause you can also use GOG & Amazon Prime Gaming games too alongside Epic Games, without GOG Galaxy or Amazon's own launcher

On Merle Dandridge being replaced Valve actually recorded with her originally but they opted to redo it, presumably rather late into development. It's a little odd that they redid Alyx's dialogue but not Eli's given how shit his soundalike is but then again Robert Guillaume's voice is so distinct that it'd be a tall order to get anything better.

There's definitely internal tension within Valve regarding their standards and practices though. Dungeon Travelers 2 was denied it's application but the remake of Dungeon Travelers 1 was cleared without problem. Evenicle passed, but Evenicle 2 didn't (but did get onto GOG). To give an idea of how important Steam is MangaGamer in a series of Tweets I can't find again responding to people asking why they bother said that Steam makes up for around 90% of all their revenue, and that's despite them running their own storefront and pubishing on GOG. These are obviously disagreements regarding sexual content guidelines but there's almost certainly similar fractures along the DEI lines, especially with how their open-concept make-your-own-teams do-what-you-want corporate structure works. Calling them a monopoly is a meme, but if Valve ever truly folds it'll be apocalyptic for anyone who wants to produce games outside of the inclusionary umbrella.

Without getting into it too much so I don't derail, it was like any other political movement with some vague complaints and ideas in common that met together. It's very difficult to build inertia for swaying public opinion, but once that train starts rolling, it's hard to stop it. If I was developing a woke game right now, I'd be crapping my pants in anxiety over the public backlash.
