Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

This is less one coherent opinion and more of a rant.

I really hate all the Berserk "references" in Soulsborne games, and the revisionism that came later. I'm watching some vids on Dark Souls 3 right now and it's all I can think about. At first, in Demon's Souls and the first game it was pretty cool an armor set here, and enemy design there but then it just kept escalating. Literally half of DS3 is just shit being ripped off from Berserk. To the point where there are at least 4 characters that are just Guts or look like him. I'll never forget, I was watching Two Best Friends Play for Dark Souls 3 and at one point even they're like "this is too much". I know the Japanese are weird about copyright, but I have to imagine Miura would've been well within his rights to sue Fromsoft after a while.

For a long time, the only place I ever saw anyone actually talk about this was on /v/ which isn't taken very seriously on the best of days. Then when Kentaro Miura died, suddenly all those "homages" were retroactively considered touching tributes. Like oh, how amazing that Miyazaki and his team did all this to honor Miura's work. It's kind of stomach churning, you know? You have a studio that spends a full decade ripping off a guy's manga for armor and weapon designs or enemy types and then when the man passes on they're praised even harder as if they planned ahead.

Welcome to Modern Writing 101. The character has to be relatable so that the struggle of women, gays, trans, and people of color can be related to something that has nothing to do with them at all. Note that back in gaming's golden age, your average hero was either some overpowered anime character or a buzz-cut space marine. It was them wanting to work towards an ideal; Bayonetta is beautiful. Marcus Fenix is strong. Now it's all about subverting that trope and making it so that it's all about relating gaming to ''oppressed'' minorities, even though said minorities were either fine with gaming as it was or don't even give two shits about it.
basically me
I'm black and i loved gaming and entertainment the way it was. Most of us are like this because we're not coons whose only personality is our skin color we just wanna play the games and are annoyed by the fact that gaming has let people with agendas try and spoon feed their beliefs to everyone. It's one of my biggest pet peeves currently where i wish peolpe would understand that something doesn't have to literally be them in order for them to get some enjoyment and relate them. This is even worse when these peolpe types of people demean other cultures for not lining up with their way of thinking.

I think the insane rise of social media addiction has a lot to do with this. People are constantly posting about themselves. They get main character syndrome and have a stroke if they don't get their fix. Influencers are the worst. They think they're huge stars. All I hear is "Alright Mr. DeMille I'm ready for my closeup". Because that's the final destination for all of them.

It's like people can't see themselves in characters that don't look like them anymore. So devs keep making these awful pandering stereotypes for diversity and inclusion. Afraid to make women falter or doubt. Afraid to cast any POCs in a negative light. Afraid to stop making trannies no one asked for. "Choose your style/type/body ect" instead of "are you a boy or a girl". Pronoun selection laundry list. Ugly female characters under the guise of "This is what the average woman looks like". It's just all pointless and insulting. I wish these trends would just die.

Speaking of this stuff, I was bored and downloaded the Harvestella demo. I don't really like farming games but this one was ok. Mainly because the farming is barebones enough not to annoy me at every turn. I did forget to put stuff in the box a few times. Mainly because fuck farming. I wish it were more optional. I guess you can just do it when you really need money.

At character creation you are asked to pick a gender then one of two bases you can edit the name, hair, voice and eye color of. But no matter which you pick (male/female/nonbinary) you can pick either the male or female base. The male base isn't very masculine. If anything it fits the enby archetype better. At first I thought it was female. Even the outfit looks kinda feminine but is even/or. It's like they went out of their way to make "lol so enby" the comfy option.

As soon as people realize this stuff is fake then it will stop happening but the issue is like you said they got main character syndrome and the issue that comes with that as well is people have to share their story with other people. I never understood the logic of people needing to see a character that represents them because then you don't like art or whatever you wanna call it for the sake of understanding different perspective you're just wanting things to be different versions of the same mirror pointing at you.

I've grown to not like character creators for little things that give me minor tism. There are slick ways devs take away freedom of choice and give you fake freedom of choice because if these character creations are the true meaning of roleplay and imagination they wouldn't go out of their way to pander to specific type of people they never needed to. This is my same argument with how tabletop like DnD started to listen to more left leaning peolpe and removing some of its features while adding some that cater to specific peolpe when the goal of DnD is that you CAN make whatever you want while using modules are tools.

This has nothing to do with what consumers want and everything to do with trends in universities going back to at least 2003, which is where I first witnessed it. Companies want that number to go up, and a gaggle of retards started emerging from higher ed with fancy degrees who told execs what their itching ears wanted to hear, which is that they held the secret to get women, blacks, and the younger generation to buy the latest slop.

Look at how old CEOs are. They're all in their 50s and 60s. They don't know the first thing about what young people want. What every consultant and piece of media they consume tells them is that what young people want is DEI. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the lede, "The new generation is different. They're diverse. They're socially conscious. They're tuned into LGBTQ+ interests. And they expect to see that reflected in their media."

But it's not what the kids want. Want they want is to kill bugs and save Super-Earth, which is the exact same thing they wanted in 1978, when Space Invaders was all the rage. Kids really don't change all that much from generation to generation. Little girls want sparkly princess crap and ponies, little boys want muscly dudes with guns and big machines that go brrrr. Older girls want to be beautiful and popular, and older boys want to be heroic and tough. Nothing has changed, but the old people who run game publishers don't believe that.

There's a reason why shit like Fortnite and FnF are popular they're simplistic games that are widely appealed by kids. It's funny how these people claim to know what kids want and try to steer kids into buying this but there is a reason why you don't see kids talking about this stuff. They're either too young to understand it it which is the common argument or they don't care. I agree with how you said that though because i feel a lot of folks regardless of age feel this way and the screaming people who want to "challenge" norms don't actually talk with normal people and see what they want they are mad at the existence of something without their input.

To expand on this, the key point to consider is that execs believe that their current fans are "locked-in." That is to say, they believe that game fans are like British shoppers, so it's safe to make all the meat halal to capture the Muslim demographic while raising prices because hey, where else are they gonna go?

Basically, the execs want the 2% sales boost they might theoretically get by adding LGBTQ+ and diversity slop, without considering that they might lose more than 2% from existing fans.

This logic, by the way, is why we got something like the Bud Light thing.

imo it's a plot by the Jews to destroy the Aryan Race. Might sound kooky, but I think it fits the facts available.

People are bitches about how much games cost nowadays.

There's complaints about Contra: Operation Galuga costing 36 bucks. Yes, I get it, in theory you could get much longer games for the same price if not cheaper, but I am pretty certain that the original Contra was more expensive.

The people I see calling it a 2 hour game sound kinda retarded tbqh

It's at least a 10 hour game with the challenges, so it's easily on the same level as most Sony games at this point at half the price.

Yep, and that worked out so well in comics too. Ironheart (the niggress, not the Japanese one) was so popular, after all.

It was probably 30 back then but thats in 1990's dollars so yea a lot more. Also I really hate the time/price argument Ive played contra 3 hundreads of times, gtav may have "more content" in its open world but it all sucks.

IDK about Contra 1, but Contra 3 was 60 dollars on the SNES.

Edit: Found a scan of the 88 Sears Wishbook, and Contra was 35 dollars

So yeah, converted Contra 1 would have been about 90 dollars today and Contra 3 would have been about 130
