I kind of blame the shitty ending for people not understanding the themes. The Kens are actually unhappy with responsibility and decision-making, and are happy to go back to being nothing but eye candy for the Barbies. They are relieved when the Barbies smugly say that the Kens will maybe earn some right to vote, sometimes. This is, in fact, very funny. But it contradicts the themes the movie had previously set up (Barbie learning about feminism/equality/the real world, Ken learning about misogyny, the Kens rising up and destroying Barbieland because they're trying to imitate misogyny). If the Kens had peacefully protested (hahaha) and/or the Barbies had been willing to allow them representation in government and equal work opportunities, it would have come through clearer. Alas.
