Bigot Brigade Something Awful and Friends - The roller-coaster train-wreck embarrassing downfall of a Web 1.0 giant and its tick offspring like from Cloverfield

Moot has said a lot of crazy shit since he sold. A chunk of those dudes were legit pedo's for sure, though, but that ain't why Lowtax kicked them
His real reasons.

Reading about all the stuff I missed growing up kind of makes me sad. (I'm Gen Z, so I'm one of the rare zoomers who knows what SA even is..) It's not "oh, I'll never see it again" sad, but more of a "man, that must have been great" sad. It actually makes me feel a little disappointed.

I don't want to dwell on it too much, but there's a reason nostalgia is considered toxic. (You keep thinking about things that never did and never will happen, so it's pointless to bother.) But damn, old SA must have been one hell of a thing to see in person. I look at threads that have a creation date longer than I was alive (that 9/11 thread made on the day comes to mind) and it makes me feel weird, in a way.

As far as old SA goes, I can't speak to that. But it must have been nice for people to go on and actually enjoy themselves some years ago (...however long some years actually is) rather than nowadays, when the goons who aren't banned or probated have to type as though they're dangling over an alligator pit.

The Farms is pretty similar to old school SA so you're kind of experiencing what it was like minus the shitty lolrandom humor and Null isn't a pill-popping wife beater. There's a good reason there's a lot of us former goons here.

Think on the bright side: be grateful you get to live in a time in human history with this vast never-ending realm of knowledge we like to call the internet. Antique peoples would have loved to bear witness to such advanced communication. I for one think it's interesting how long some communities have been online, some even date back to the '80s.
Learn about the past to make the future more comfy, that's my mindset.

Kiwifarms is probably the closest thing the modern internet has to prime SA. But because this site has so many enemies people here can't powerlevel as much as they could on SA. So you don't get the same insane personal stories about goons doing fucked up shit in their private lives.

Old SA is very similar to KF, the main differences being people being serious about politics was mostly kept in the debates forum, lots more original content generated because it was fun and it wasn’t thought of as “content” (ie something to generate money or e-fame) and ofc far less anonymity and way more power leveling.

SA had a yearbook, people listed a myriad of ways to contact them on their profile page, had city meet ups and holy shit all the “I’m bored talk to me” threads where countless goons would post their phone numbers (not burner phones, not anonymous VOIPs, their home phone, mobile phone or even a landline at their parents house) just to call and talk with other goons at 2 am. Even I thought posting your phone number on SA was retarded, but lots of people did it.

One of the depressing developments of the evolution of the internet is it went from being a place where people were brutally honest to a place where you either have to be running an positive advertising campaign about your life or be anonymous.

idk if it has been posted in this thread before (it probablt has been), but if you want a snapshot of old SA culture here's "This movie makes you stupid" a short film about the 2004 goonmeet:

If I remember my SA lore correctly "ELF PRON", the goonette who had her nudes leaked ended up getting murdered by her roommate.

I think the last goonmeet was in 2008 and only had half a dozen people. Because by that point online communities were becoming less tightknit. And also probably because Lowtax fucked up organising the goonmeets somehow. I'm not even going to look into that I just know that it's true.

Interesting little sidenote Kiwifarms way back when was relaxed enough there was a dedicated selfie thread. You can find some of them still on ED. It wasn't always as paranoid and uptight about sharing info as it is now. The internet really has just gotten worse.

I do not believe Elf Pron was murdered. The whole thing smelled of trolling. Elf Pron just happened to live the sequel script for SWF?

Idk, I’d be curious what did happen to her only because I read a rumor about murder and never could believe it.

This is one of the big differences between the Old Internet and the New. Back then, the internet didn't matter. It was the irrelevant gathering place of nerds, freaks, weirdos, and hobbyists. "The Internet Is Serious Business!" became a meme because, back then, it obviously, transparently, wasn't serious business, and next to no one thought so. People posted their phone numbers on SA because, sure, it wasn't wise to share it with strangers, but it would only ever be seen by like 20 randos who didn't know you personally scattered across three continents. What was the worst that could happen?

Well, the goons were some of the first people to find out how bad it could get, after the internet became, depressingly, very serious business indeed.
