Shit going down in Newfoundland today.

Though it's not as big a part of the economy as it once was, the fishery is still pretty big in Newfoundland. For the last 20 years or so, the market has been tightly controlled by government, with fishermen only allowed to sell product to fish plants in the province for prices set by the FFAW. The FFAW is the Fish Food and Allied Worker's a union representing both fishermen and fish plant despite their conflicting interests. This has never sat right with fishermen, because they get a lower price for their product than they could on the open market in the interest of keeping fish plant jobs in rural communities. The FFAW has set crab prices quite low the last few years, despite the fact that the price of everything is up across the board, and the fact the fish plants in Nova Scotia are actively paying a higher price for crab. You follow me so far?

Fishermen protests have been intensifying over the last couple of years, with many crab fishermen refusing to even go in the water last year and getting fined by the union over it. This year they've been picketing the Confederation Building(Newfoundland's parliament), and things seem to be coming to a head today as the government is trying to bring down the 2024 budget and the fishermen are chasing away anyone trying to enter the confederation building.

Now, even though I disagree, I kind of understand why government would try to protect the fish plants to a point. The fish plant is the economic driver in many small towns and without it, the town would die. It's like a lot of towns in the rust belt where everyone worked at the factory and when the factory shut down, the town died. However, most of these towns are aging rapidly and they can no longer find people to work in the fish plants. These fish plants have been bringing in boatloads of TFWs every year, so the fishermen are essentially being forced to subsidize fishplants that are actively being staffed by people who are not Canadian citizens.

It's also worth noting that the lady they drove away from the building in that video, Meghan McCabe, used to work for CBC. I don't know what it's like in other provinces, but it is a little disgusting here in Newfoundland how many journalists, the people who are supposed to hold government to account, are using their journalism jobs as a stepping stone to get major positions in the government. Seems like a conflict of interest.

There's no one in the party with any power other than Trudeau. Maybe that was by some genius on Trudeau's part (unlikely) or under the hood it's basically still the Dion party just without a celebrity/star player. Martin internally was nearly as powerful as Chretien, but not quite enough. Once Chretien was at his weakest he was toast. That was probably taken as a lesson by Trudeau to always keep the party especially the cabinet as weak, corrupt and ineffectual as possible.

Trudeau is at full Ceausescu now and believes only he can fix Canada and his polling problems are just a temporary blip. It's a far more intriguing question as to whether Freeland is actually dumb enough to take the reigns if he did step down for another reason (ie, people being mean to him all the time). Just how powerful is that nazi DNA... could she resist? It's not every century you get a free and clear chance to burn down a Reichstag.

Provincial Government headed to the supreme court now to seek an injunction against the protestors blocking the entrances to the building. We'll see where it goes from there. You've all seen this song and dance by this point. They'll probably start trying to freeze people's bank accounts, though it's worth saying a lot of these older fishermen work for cash as hired hands on fishing boats and don't need a bank account to function like a lot of people do, because they live on family land and don't have mortgages and stuff.

Welp, sounds like we might have some fun - Poilievre is apparently looking to force a confidence vote over the carbon tax.

OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre wants to bring down the government this week if it refuses to cancel the $15 per tonne planned carbon tax increase set to happen on April 1.

“Today, I’m announcing that I’m giving Trudeau one last chance to spike his hike. One last chance, and only one more day,” Poilievre said in a speech to his caucus on Wednesday.
“I’m announcing that if Trudeau does not declare today an end to his forthcoming tax increases on food, gas and heat, that we will introduce a motion of non-confidence in the prime minister,” he said.

That motion is meant to ask MPs to vote on whether they have confidence in the current government. If it loses the vote, the government is expected to resign or seek the dissolution of Parliament which would force a general election to be held.

Poilievre has already said that he expects the next election to focus on the carbon tax.

“In that carbon tax election, there will be a very simple choice,” he said on Wednesday.

“On the one hand, you will have the carbon tax coalition of the NDP and Justin Trudeau who take your money, punish your work, tax your food, double your housing costs and unleash crime and chaos in your community,” he said.
“Or common-sense Conservatives who will axe the tax, build the homes, fix the budget and stop the crime.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has already stated that he has no plans to back down from his carbon tax increase, which is set to raise gas prices by 3 cents a litre.

The confidence motion is set to be debated during the Conservatives’ second opposition day of the week on Thursday with a vote planned later that day.

It is unlikely to pass, given that Liberals and New Democrats have a supply-and-confidence agreement which aims to keep Trudeau’s government in power until June 2025.

But Conservatives are hoping that some Liberal MPs, especially those in Atlantic provinces, will join their call to “spike the hike.”

They will also be forcing a vote on the carbon tax on Wednesday afternoon to echo the concerns of seven out of 10 provincial premiers and call on the federal government to cancel the increase in the carbon tax on April 1.

Realistically? I don't expect this to go through - as mentioned, the Liberals are basically a Justin Trudeau Personality Cult, and Singh won't risk his chance at getting a government pension so he'll likely stay as Trudy's Hand Puppet. That said, helluva way to show people which MP's are willing to ignore the outcry against the carbon tax.

Oh sure. You and I don’t need any more information. We see what’s happening and have for years, I assume.

But formerly “reasonable” “centrists” who were fine with the Libs are getting pushed not to the limit, but beyond. And frankly they won’t change without feeling levels of pain I personally don’t feel are necessary.

It’s a game of attrition. Most formerly comfortable smug libs who wake up and smell the time aren’t going back.

Right now “send them back” is outside the Overton window, but things are changing.

On the topic of labor disputes - The two big Canadian railroads(CN and CP Rail) are gearing up to strike at about the same time, in about two months minimum.
The TL;DR:

1. Both companies are trying to push an hourly wage onto their conductors and engineers, who have until now been paid by the mile.
2. An hourly wage would(according to various union reps) be a wage cut of minimum 18k a year.
3. This hourly would also include a mandatory 10 hour shift, 12 hours maximum shift, and maximum 10 hours rest alongside removal of other important concepts, like being able to book unfit for work.
4. CP Rail(Now known also as CPKC)'s Rail Traffic Controllers(Dispatchers) are also disputing their contract at the same time, which means even if managers could fill the role of conductors and engineers, they would likely be unable to move on the lines efficiently, if at all.

For obvious reasons, having both major inland freight-hauling companies in Canada go on strike at the same time would be a heavy impact on store shelves. Given the libs' apparent fear of working-class men and their ability to not work, it's a bit of a toss-up as to whether or not the government will let this one go on too long.
