This is probably why it stung him so much that people here and elsewhere didn't give him that validation to the point that he had to keep reminding everyone how much he "doesn't care".

Unfortunately for Nick, he isn't built for mature/healthy relationships or real friends due to his anti-social tendencies and inability to process genuine concern from others as anything other than an attack. Insecure, spiteful, and though he may not be literally alone (wife and kids) Nick sure seems lonely.
