Someone in this thread mentioned the ExoDOS collection, which is brilliant, but within it I found this little treat of an Ubi Soft game from 1990.

I had that on the Amiga as a kid. It took ages to find it. I always had a thing for controversial games.

I seem to remember a bit of pearl clutching in the gaming press when it was released, but it was more over it not being suitable for kids rather than over wrong think.

I found a good video talking about the current crisis in competence in gaming. This is coming from a perspective of a COD youtuber, one who has nothing else to talk about since COD is perhaps the finest example of a "AAAA" game that has fallen apart completely. I found it interesting since it gave me an epiphany: He doesn't mention any of the SBI stuff or the wokeness in gaming, because at the end of the day games would be shit even without it. If you removed all the fags, the diversity hire characters, made every character aryan and beautiful the games today would still be hot garbage. The foundations have rotten away completely and the whole situation with DEI and SBI are just the cherry on top of this shit sundae. Figured I might link the video for a different perspective:
Funny how he admits that he is taking more sponsorships(including the one in that video) and has nothing else to do other than to bitch because the game he has been covering for years has become so creatively and morally bankrupt that he simply cannot do it anymore, content creators simply don't get views when they cover it anymore(If you want to know just how much of a disaster the most recent COD has been, check out the thread on it here). More people have to get loud and say "I am not buying this slop", simply not opening up your wallet isn't enough anymore. If you stay quiet, then the boy's club will simply make sure to all write coordinated articles about how game X succeeded and only a few chuds were angry that it had diversity in it, when the truth is the game sucked and nobody bought it. Harder to do that when the average gamer does not stay quiet, more shitty games need to be tarred and feathered than just the biggest flops like Redfall or Suicide Squad.

DEI fucks think they can write black & brown characters but all they are producing is horrible garbage because these people CAN'T WRITE. Imagine them being forced to write a cast full of (straight) white characters. They would complain on Xitter how hard their job is, that they can't write from a "privileged POV", that it's racist to write about oppressors etc. etc. And they would create absolute abysmal characters, even worse than the POC ones.

The weird thing is the story of someone being down trodden who overcomes their oppression is a universal theme nearly all of humanity can empathise with. Who doesn’t love an underdog triumphing over adversity?

Not only can’t these people write they are affluent and have no struggle in their life at all. I’m not doubting that someone has called them a nigger once or twice but they idea that they’ve faced anyone of the struggles of the many of the white working class lads I went to school with is preposterous.

Their oppression is a LARP and the don’t have the humanity or talent to even write it convincingly.

Fuck these grifters and I hope they all starve in Minecraft once the industry collapses.

Making female characters in video games less appealing to straight men is less a function of atonement and more driven by sexual motivations. It's part of a larger effort against beauty standards (which is to say "beauty.")

The idea is to remove beautiful women from media and prop up unattractive women in their place and portray them as beautiful. The reason for this is because prog-lib woman who care about this stuff have objectively unattractive physical traits and tend to be closer to middle age. This puts them at a disadvantage in the sexual market because men prefer younger, beautiful women. By attempting to change what female beauty is, and by branding being attracted to beautiful women as oppressive and toxic, they intend funnel attractive men towards unattractive women and away from beautiful women.

This has the side-effect of also funneling unattractive and average men to them. So they also have introduced rules, selectively applied only to unattractive and average men, regarding when and where and how it is acceptable ask a woman out. If one follows these rules, one discovers that it's only acceptable to ask a woman out on a dating app. But in the apps, you both have to pick each other to send a message, so effectively unattractive and average men can't ask a woman out there, either. This bars unattractive and average men from taking action in the dating market at all, leaving only the attractive men who have been funneled away from attractive women.

In video games specifically, there's an additional element. The general perception is that men who play video games are unattractive. So, why try to alter unattractive men's perception of beauty at all? They're not. To women, unattractive and average men are invisible. I mean that near-literally. They just don't notice them independently. Their brains filter these men out somewhere before conscious thought. However, when knowledge of the existence of an unattractive or average man is imposed on their attention, they hate it. Especially if it reminds them that these men have sexuality. Women tolerate, in the abstract, the existence of unattractive and average men as unnoticed worker bees who keep the world functional, but outside of that they find those men's existence offensive and have unlimited scorn for them. So when they see a beautiful woman in a video game, they are reminded that men who play video games like it. This reminds them that those men possess a sexual aspect to their nature, and it causes in them more hate than they could ever muster for any rapist or murderer.

I think that is the main point people are actually mad about. Nobody cares that the characters are diverse and ugly, if the main character looks like a mutant it doesn't matter if the game is good. But these characters are specifically added to the game so that when people call it out for being terrible they can hide behind them and say they actually made a good game and people are just racist/sexist/whatever.

I care that just the women are ugly. When it's both I don't care, as it's stylistic, but when men represent the ideal, the women don't and the rest of the world looks amazing I have an issue. It is bad design, yeah I'm probably more angry at shit monetization, terrible writing and plot, and poorly designed gameplay and systems, but that's like 5 things lumped together vs not man faced hag women or diversity.

Hmm, Payday 3, Darkest Dungeon 2, Evil Geniuses 2, I can definitely see a point. Take out the wokeshit and games would still be shit because game devs (and most of the entertainment industry) want product first, not enjoyment.

They all have Kojima syndrome.

That is to say, they do not want to write videogames, they do not actually care about making videogames or telling a good story. If they could make bank writing about their life or blogging they would do that instead.

This in and of itself isn't necessarily terrible, but it becomes terrible when combined with a problem I just brought up in the Unpopular Opinions topic from a different angle: none of these people have the capacity to imagine what it's like to be someone else, or be in a terrible situation. They don't realize making a Whedonesque quip might not necessarily be appropriate in a given situation for that character. It's their idea of the Rule of Cool, just do Thing because it seems cool.

And it's not just the writers either. Many of the consumers have this difficulty of imagining things/suspending disbelief. If it's not directly or the screen or something they are directly told they don't think of things.

I am writing far too much about videogames today, oh well.
