Business California fast food workers celebrate $20 minimum wage as managers, companies warn of cut hours, layoffs - "The pay increase marks a significant step forward for cooks and cashiers who have fought for over a decade for living wages and better working conditions — and it’s only the beginning of their fight," a union said in a statement on the matter.

The California Fast Food Workers Union held a rally on Wednesday celebrating the state requiring fast food workers to be paid at least $20 per hour. An email sent before the event stated that due to "low worker turnout," the event was no longer being advised for press coverage. The union claimed this email was a "mistake."

An initial email sent to KCRA California Capitol Correspondent Ashley Zavala stated that "fast-food cooks and cashiers from across Sacramento will hold a rally Wednesday to celebrate the historic fast-food minimum wage increase to $20/hr, which took effect on April 1."

"The pay increase marks a significant step forward for cooks and cashiers who have fought for over a decade for living wages and better working conditions — and it’s only the beginning of their fight."

The email stated that attendees of the rally would also be going to fast food locations within the city to "educate other cooks and cashiers about the raise, their rights and protections and what workers can continue to win together through the California Fast Food Workers Union."

A follow-up email stated, "This event is expected to have low worker turnout and is in fact not being advised to for press coverage. Please ignore the advisory that was sent before. Apologies for the inconvenience."

Zavala later reported that the rally was still going on as planned, and "one of the rally organizers says the email sent to media orgs about low worker turnout was a mistake."

Video of the event showed a small group celebrating outside the state capital.

The bill went into effect on April 1, and affects companies with more than 60 locations nationwide, according to the Washington Examiner.

Some companies and managers have warned that the pay increase will come alongside cut hours for employees.

"I am used to being a champion of labor, and I’m in this odd position," said Michela Mendelsohn, who manages six El Pollo Loco restaurants. "We’re having to get more efficient. So really, what’s left is … to reduce labor hours. And I hate saying that.”

One worker, Sangra Jauegui, said she was happy to get the additional money in her paycheck, but was worried about her co-workers’ hours being cut.

“My boss told me that he won’t reduce my hours but that he will cut others’ hours,” Jauregui said.

Companies such as Jack in the Box, Chipotle, McDonald’s, and Starbucks have warned that the wage increase could inflate menu prices by between 2.5 and 3.5 percent. Pizza Hut has warned around 1,000 workers that they could lose their jobs.

Now I'm curious what the endgame is here.
32-Hour workweek while being paid for 40 hours. Seriously.

And eventually, Universal Basic Income so they can just plain not work and be supported by those who do.

These idiots are so disconnected from reality that it's insane.

I saw a video where someone recorded a meeting between a restaurant manager (I think it was McDonalds) and his team. He was being honest and professional, telling the staff that due to the wage hike, they would be cutting most of the staff to part time hours.

He even explained "They give me X dollars for labor. That's all I get, period. The higher wages don't change that. So that means cutting people and reducing hours to make the numbers match. Sorry, but that's the way it is."

The workers kept saying "Just charge more for food!" and he kept trying to explain that they're already some of the most expensive Fast Food in the entire country.

I lost my shit when some girl with a calculator finished doing some math, and started crying saying "With the hours cut, I make less money than before the wage increase! This wasn't supposed to happen!"

EDIT: I can't find the video. I think it got taken down.

I always like hearing these American companies whine about how they can't afford to pay their workers higher wages. These companies are raking in billions of dollars a year. They can afford it. They don't have to lay anyone off or cut any hours. They just have to be willing to take a small cut in their profits. But they can't have that. Fuck em. Let them go out of business. If they can't afford to pay their employees enough to keep them off welfare and from living in a cardboard box next to the dumpster out back, then they have failed as a business, and they shouldn't be in business. If you can't afford to pay your employees, you need to go out of business. If 80% of them are welfare that's not a fucking business. It's slavery.

The issue is these rich fucks don't want to do that. They want to whine about it like anyone fucking cares. Eat the rich.

Just going to note that pay does not equate to working conditions.
Fucking leftists don't even know you can have fulfilling employment.
They assume every job is misery and that "pay" somehow makes miserable working conditions less miserable, which is ridiculous.

And eventually, Universal Basic Income so they can just plain not work and be supported by those who do.
In fairness, the endgame we're rapidly careening toward is AI and robotic automation putting 90% of people out of work, while the remaining 10% of "capital owners" continue to surrender that capital slowly upward through consolidation to the top 0.001%.
To prevent French Revolution 2.0, they will be compelled to provide Roman style bread and circuses to the masses.

I graduated from a California high school over 20 years ago. My senior year we had Government the first semester and Economics the second. I didn’t learn a single practical thing about either subject the whole year. What I know about them I learned from reading books on my own time. The vast majority of the kids I went to school with didn’t have the inclination to learn anything outside what was ‘taught’ in school. It’s only gotten worse. California Public Schools are social engineering programs first and if there’s anytime left over they might teach kids something useful. It’s why Democrats have been in power for 60 years, have only made things worse and yet keep getting elected.

  • Prices went up.
  • Profits went up.
  • Wages went down or remained the same.
Nobody lost their shit.

  • Prices are still going up.
  • Profits are still increasing.
  • Wages go up.
Suddenly it's the fucking apocalypse.

Maybe, just fucking maybe! Companies can use some of their massive profit and pay their employees so they don't need SNAP. Because I'm tired of the scam. People work full time and still need assistance, that their taxes pay for, while the company they work for gets tax breaks and special deals that are paid for by...The taxes their employees pay. But of course the jews in the sidelines are ready with their hands out, they can't wait to charge more for rent, more for cereal, more for milk, just because someone else made a little more money.

Edit: It also begs the question: Why the fuck were the prices going up to begin with? If what they're paid is connected to the actual price, then why were they always paid shit, even though the prices were continuously rising? The Math is not mathing because it's all made up bullshit.

"Just take less profits and don't buy a third boat, fatcat capitalist" isn't the solution you think it is. You would be shocked how, for any 20 given restaurant or retail stores, how little the profit margin is after rent, utilities, cost of products, and wages. A store that does $5M in volume might have a profit of $25,000, or lose money in a given year. A hike to wages, and/or loss of sales due to higher prices to offset that will just cause a lot of locations to close.

So long as they're the ones receiving the increase, then the plight of the company overall isn't a concern.
Or the plight of their fellow wagies:
One worker, Sangra Jauegui, said she was happy to get the additional money in her paycheck, but was worried about her co-workers’ hours being cut.

“My boss told me that he won’t reduce my hours but that he will cut others’ hours,” Jauregui said.
But Miss "Fuck You, Got Mine" will soon be unhappy to learn she's expected to work twice as hard and get yelled at by customers because instead of 6 people working there's only 4.

In a few years they will make $25 the minimum in CA and the boulder will continue to roll down the hill.

These workers should not be celebrating, they are putting a timer on their own jobs. Only a matter of time before automation catches up, and this will just get these companies to work on it harder.

We're getting to the point when all occupations need their median wage or salary put on a scale with the minimum wage as the baseline. Then as soon as inflationary pressures require the latter be hiked, all other occupations have their rate automatically scaled up. There'd be far broader support and greater awareness of purchasing power if this were introduced.
Union wagies median wage have been tied to minimum wage ever since its inception. So the union bosses have been very happy every time minimum wage is increase as union wages also increase.

20 dollars an hour works out to about 39k a year pre tax, is that right?
The median wage in the uk is 29k. That’s before taxes which at that level would be about 24k take home (460 ish a week.)
Your fast food wagies are being paid over half as much again as professionals in the UK. It never ceases to astonish me how much more you guys are aid for everything. I know for a fact the people doing my job (even in less experience) in the USA get 2.5x what I do
I met with some European coworkers recently and they randomly asked about our retirement benefits. I was expecting reddit-style smugness but as soon as I mentioned how it was possible to save $70k a year in retirement accounts, their jaws dropped to the floor as the amount I mentioned saving was more than their entire after-tax salary. Another American tried to console them by pointing out that they had a pension, only for them to ask how much Social Security paid. That didn’t help because Social Security alone pays more than their pension.

Misc fun fact. Thanks to these 'min-wage' initiatives, jobs not only get reduced time but also it tends to get lots of people fired because of budgetary issues. As a result, what would have been a full staff in any workplace may be slashed down where all of a sudden, that remaining staff has to do extra responsibilities just to compensate for the missing people. The sad part about this is that the pay isn't really worth the extra responsibility especially when the amount gained isn't that great.

The real issue here is Commiefornia overtaxing its people and all the gibsmedats that they have been throwing out like candy to the not-so-productive side of the state. Bums that smoke fent all day come to mind. Then there's the issue of people not being taught how to be pragmatic anymore. Being wasteful and retarded with your money is precisely why you don't have much cash in your bank account to begin with. And UBI ain't gonna fix that bad habit.

Socialism.
And then full-blown Communism.

Every time they raise the min wage the cost of living jumps by the same amount.

It's not a raise if everything you buy costs more in the end. Your actually just getting a decrease all dandied up to make you feel good for having less.

Yay! I make 2 dollars a hour more!! Wait what do you mean my rent is going up by 2.50? Why is food more expensive? Why are my hours being cut back ect ect.

Same old song and dance, it's almost like the Left doesn't actually understand how economics work and think more money means more wealth.

Some people are capable of performing long division and others can't. Leftists can't.

It’s less than £7.50 for a Big Mac large meal in the uk. Uk minimum wage for over 21s is £11.44. So a wage:Big Mac meal ratio of about 0.66 - what’s the equivalent in California? How much is a large Big Mac meal?

The Left never gets money in general and the farther Left you go the more insane they get until you reach the UBI and Commie stages where lunacy rules and reality is something to be sneered at.

The Lefties have always thought that money is just created. It's some kind of magical thing that just exisits like air or water. It's just there for the taking but those darn dirty capitlists just horde it for themselves.

It just pops into the world via some filthy capitalist wanting some. It's almost magical to them and thus not really tethered to reality. The state need more money for more gibs? Just tax more, take more, print more. No big deal right? Those filthy capitalists will just have to make more for us.

You'll notice the Left also never talks about creating wealth, it's always about redistribution.

That's another symptom of their lack of understand towards capital and shows their biases on reality. And of course it's why socialist systems always collapse eventually because you can't redistribute wealth unless you can also create it. Eventually all the original capital you stole from it's owners gets used up by the parasites who can only use money and not create it and so the system hollows out from within. And that's not even adressing the gaint elephant in the room that is the systematic corruption of any authoritarian government.

TLDR: Lefties just don't understand how money is just a byproduct of wealth and not it's root cause and so just take it until everyone around them is bankrupt then go DaFuq, Where Money Gone?

TLDRCR: Commies bad Lefties = Commies therefore Lefties bad.

They don't care or understand. They'll still just spout "if you can't pay your employees, you shouldn't have a business", even though that mindset only helps the ultrarich.
