Users at the time, myself included, mocked Couch Cuck and had more sympathy for the victims.

The only thing that annoyed me about how users talked about Couch Cuck was that he did, sadly, kill two teenagers before the couch, and that got forgotten. It made him look like even more of a fucking loser, but he did have victims.

It wasn't just that though, the insane and conflicting stories Hector was telling cast way more doubts. And I still would like an explanation for those, and for the 'friend' that was listening to Byuu die for an hour on the phone. Hector is an unbelievable piece of shit for inserting himself into all of this. He doesn't seem to play a role in the events at all, rather some Dutch guy did the most to try and save Byuu.

This was always to me the most interesting part of the story. Byuu could have killed himself elsewhere, gone back to the US, stayed alive in Japan - I didn't think about whether he was still alive or not, didn't even particularly care. But I was, and am, certain that Hector was lying about a lot of it, that Wayne Beckett wasn't genuine, and that things could not have occurred the way Hector said they did.

Even now, the only way half of what we know to be true and his version of events could make sense was if, for example, byuu's husband was the mysterious anonymous person on the other end of the phone in the document and he listened as byuu died. Hector's version of events still has lies in it even though byuu is likely actually dead, and the only way to make those lies fit is to make the two or three people who have claimed actual involvement in byuu's final moments look far more responsible, even culpable, than the Farms.

The bit that makes me feel bad is the bit that always made me feel bad, which is the anonymity of a life lived mostly online allowing that anonymity. People knew the names Near and byuu far more than they knew David Ginder, and apparently no one gave a single shit about David Ginder. It took several years to even get correct records for his death. That's not about the cruelty of the Farms, that's about the double-edge of a life lived anonymously and without strong real world connections.

I never had a ps1 and I remember emulating that back in the day it was the only way I played any ps1 game but emulating them was like a game all by itself. Almost every game needed some kind of settings tweak to work properly. A lot of games needed special specific game settings enabled. Even then sometimes they wouldn't work properly or the framerate would be shit.

I had a snes, we had a bunch of games for it, but I probably have more playtime on zsnes than I do the actual snes. I didn't have Chrono Trigger on the actual snes, but I did play it for the first time on zsnes and you know what, it was way better sitting at a desk on a computer than sitting on the floor in the hallway next to the shitty old TV where we had the snes hooked up because it was the only TV we were allowed to use for it after we got an n64.

I also played a whole bunch of games considered classics for the first time that way because we never owned them and the video store in town didn't have them available for rent. I also played games that were never released here with very questionably accurate translations for the first time on zsnes. That was how I played my favourite final fantasy game, Final Fantasy 5, for the first time. So many great games I played for the very first time on zsnes and snes9x.

But you know what I have no memories of, bsnes, because that shit didn't run games for shit and the only thing that seemed interesting about it was apparently accurate or some shit but that shit literally doesn't matter if it runs games at the pace of a snail, at least back then it did, because the only thing about those old consoles that was important was the games and there is 80 million different ways to play all those games pretty much any time you want now.

I never used bsnes myself, and I think I'm one of the bigger emulation spergs on the farms.

There was a whole goofy thing long ago about how Byuu designed bsnes to only work with .sfc files, despite most SNES roms being .smc, all because of his autism over accuracy. .smc roms were named as such because of the Super MagiCom game copier:


They were contemporary to the SNES, and let you run games from floppies. Neat stuff. Of course, this meant anyone could copy games and make mistakes, and this triggered Byuu's autism into going on a whole lifelong crusade against .smc dumps, which culminated in his quest to copy literally every single cartridge ever produced in every region, which included a funny story about a bunch of carts getting lost in the mail that's here on the farms somewhere.

But, that's why his shitty emulator didn't work, while everything else did. bsnes is closer to a development tool than an actual way to play video games. And speaking of which, nowadays I just use Mesen, which works as easily as Snes9X but has a bunch of development tools built right in. I have never actually found Byuu's own software to be useful, even when I buckled down and figured out how to use it. His multi-console emulators are interface nightmares, and he really got lost up his own ass with them. For as much work as he did, the whole concept of just dragging a ROM into the emulator and letting the emulator automatically figure out how to play it based on metadata was an alien concept.
