A lot of people look at religion as something mostly about their own subjective feelings rather than something intellectual. Even though Gosney is a lawyer, he may only be into religion for the spiritual, emotional aspects of it. Based on my own life experience and on what I've learned from others, most Christians have never even read through the Bible or even the New Testament, let alone studied things like the Church Doctors. (They wouldn't even know who they are.) Most Christians know barely anything about theology or church history or anything like that.
