To be fair, that happened at around the peak of #DropKiwifarms, so emotions were high, and with how little was known about what happened, how Hector kept making less sense, and how the forum users were in full autistic defense mode, the faked suicide narrative became the main counterweapon if you could call it. Turns out both sides were autistic, and if it wasn't for bureaucratic bullshit, the autistic slapfight between KF users and troons using Byuu's corpse wouldn't have happened.
What does he have to say? He was right kiwis were wrong. You are the ones who need to say something to him, namely we need you all to apologized for spreading lies and misinformation.
There is no need to apologize for being skeptical. The KF ethos or "brand" (for want of a better word) is about evidence and substantiation. A skeptical disposition is most appropriate in a forum where evidence and verification play a central role.
I was skeptical about Ginder's death because the forensic and bureaucratic turnaround appeared too fast, and the singular channel of information—Hector—was not credible. I—and many others—had/have no concern about how Ginder's suicide impacts the forum. My skepticism about Ginder's death had no relation to a concern for KF's public/media relations, image, reputation, or culpability.
I'll reiterate what I have already written. Ginder was mentally ill—with a multitude of serious illnesses—that were untreated and unchecked. He may have also had an undiagnosed personality disorder, which would explain some of his bizarre behavior.
A thread on KF is incapable of causing the mental disorders that troubled Ginder,
and the inconsequentiality of Grinder's thread prevents it from being assigned a causative role in Ginder's mental deterioration and eventual suicide.
If the line of attack against KF is going to be that Ginder was hypersensitive and his thread worsened his mental condition—as Ginder claimed—then the problem becomes Ginder's hypersensitivity (to objectively minor events). Ginder attributed this hypersensitivity to
Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), an unrecognized mental disorder. Regardless of the ontology of RSD, Ginder himself attributed his hypersensitivity to this mental disorder. He conceded that the problem is not his KF thread
per se but his (purported) RSD. Absent KF, Ginder's "RSD" would have found ego assault elsewhere.
Taking the (inconsequential) content of Ginder's incipient thread together with his admission of irrational hypersensitivity, the causal connection between KF and his suicide is extremely weak. Regardless of the thread's existence, the hypersensitivity would persist and have existed had the thread not been created. We can't say that had the KF thread
not existed, Ginder would
not have committed suicide. We can't have any confidence in this counterfactual conditional because Ginder was seriously mentally ill independent of KF, and he unambiguously stated that his subjective state was more connected to his pre-existing mental illness than his thread. Similarly, we can have no confidence that had Null removed the thread, Ginder would not have taken his own life. Ginder's fragile mental state and his cognitive distortions would likely have found some other object of distress. This is not empty speculation. Ginder would not have experienced a spontaneous remission had his thread been deleted. The downward trajectory of his untreated collection of mental illnesses would have continued. Returning to the psychotherapy that he declared had not helped him would not have altered the path of this deterioration.
This isn't a logically coherent series of thoughts you can rely upon.
Ginder's thoughts are so disorganized here that he doesn't realize that he is promising to continue his (unspecified) psychotherapy sessions even though he asserts that they are of no help. Given that he is planning his suicide, it is a safe conclusion that he is correct that psychotherapy has not helped him.
There is no good reason to invest Ginder's final few posts with credibility or insight. The most likely scenario had Null deleted the thread is that Ginder delayed his suicide for a few days. Nothing in his life would have changed, and the planned psychotherapy wouldn't (and couldn't) improve his mental state. It's highly unlikely that Ginder would go from an agitated state of readiness to complete suicide—with all the required equipment and necessary conviction—to no suicidal ideation. That isn't reality. The only way he could have been prevented from hanging himself was if he were hospitalized and suitably sedated.
Mental healthcare in Japan is
comparatively poor, and there are
cultural reasons for not seeking treatment and underreporting of mental illness, i.e., it is likely much worse than the official statistics indicate. If I understand correctly, Ginder was not a fluent Japanese speaker. This would have further impeded his ability to obtain effective treatment. A sensible person would have tallied all of these cons of staying in Japan and concluded that it would be best to return to the USA. By his admission, there was no compelling reason to stay in Japan. Ginder had
- no IRL/AFK social circle in Japan;
- poor results from Japanese mental healthcare;
- the funds for obtaining high-quality mental healthcare in the USA;
- the ability to do his console emulation stuff from anywhere in the world;
- no pressure to work; and
- the résumé to find work in the USA (if he wanted it).
None of this points to "stay in Japan, offer Null 120K USD to remove thread, commit suicide." It does to a disordered mind, which is my point.
If we are to apportion blame for Ginder's suicide, he was failed by his parents, Japanese mental healthcare professionals, and those who claimed to have cared for him.
