Welsh villagers fear travellers could spark new Aberfan disaster as they dig up tons of earth in Valleys as 800 sign petition demanding they be kicked out

  • Fears have been expressed about works near Nantyglo Rugby Club in Wales
  • A group of travellers has been carving out land nearby, sparking landslip fears
A village in Wales is fearing another Aberfan disaster after travellers brought in diggers and a bulldozer that locals say will 'destabilise' the landscape.

More than 800 people have signed a petition to get the travellers removed from a patch of land they own in Nantyglo, Monmouthshire, after the new arrivals began carving chunks out of the land, seemingly for the purposes of settling there.

But the land has a covenant attached banning the construction of buildings on the site - and the local council has served the group with a stop notice ordering them to halt the works. The travellers insist they are 'entitled' to dig up the land.

Locals fear, however, that the works will disturb the fragile ground, which sits above historic mine shafts, and could spark a brand new Aberfan disaster, when a colliery spoil tip collapsed in 1966. The resulting landslip killed 144 people.

Meanwhile the travellers have set up a GoFundMe page asking for donations, seemingly to turn the land into a new settlement. It has raised £50 of a £10,000 goal.

Mother-of-two Yvonne Bell, 55, who lives next to the excavated land, started the Change.org petition with her daughter Jasmin.

The online appeal, which has collected 880 signatures to date, says the 'unauthorised occupation' may constitute a breach of privacy and could push down the house prices of the properties that are overlooked by the new arrivals.

But further to that, Mrs Bell fears the works on the fragile land, which sits above old mining tunnels, could spark a new Aberfan disaster.

She said: 'There are old mine shafts under our houses, we've had non-stop rain for months and now the land supporting our road and houses have been stripped away.

'We are worried sick that what they've done could cause another Aberfan.'

The Aberfan disaster claimed the lives of 116 children and 28 adults when a mountain of coal waste fell onto the village in October 1966.

Grandmother Mrs Bell, a retired care worker, said: 'There is a row of pensioners' homes below the land they're dug up and we are above it.

'The council is saying they are concerned about the stability of the land - how are we expected to sleep at night?

'Everyone is saying there could be another Aberfan disaster, what a horrible thought.'

One post on social media says he hoped people living next to the excavated land had good home insurance.

The travellers, who arrived in a convoy of caravans, have accused locals of racism by calling them 'gypsies' and throwing empty beer bottles at them.

But Mrs Bell says the group has actually been seeking to stoke tensions themselves, daubing their own caravans with words like 'g****' and 'fire' to accuse villagers of hostility.
She said: 'There have been no safety measures and a lot of ground has been taken away, which supports the very busy road above'

There are fears of intimidation among some local residents, including this woman, who did not want to be identified

Mrs Bell said: 'The travellers have created a cancer in our community. I know some people are intimidated by them but I will stand up and say we don't want them here.'

She claimed a traveller dressed in a camouflage jacket used his mobile phone to take photographs of angry residents who were surveying the ugly black scar in the heart of the village.

Mrs Bell said: 'There have been threats and intimidation, they've only been here a week and we've had problems with kids on quad bikes, howling dogs and beer bottles being thrown.

'It won't be long before they move a load more caravans onto the site and then the council will have to put in electricity, water and drains for them.

'The last thing we want is a travellers site established in the middle of our village.'

The field next to the village rugby club was bought by a traveller family last year for £30,000 with the apparent intention of keeping horses on it.

This is in line with a covenant placed on the land, confirmed by land registry documents, which state it can only be used for grazing and no buildings should be erected.

But over the Easter weekend the travellers turned up with heavy plant machinery and started ripping up the field, moving tons of earth and destroying the hillside.

Six caravans arrived on the site and since then there's been an uneasy stand-off between residents of Porters Road and the new arrivals.

The GoFundMe page to support the site works, set up by Luke Salathiel, appears to suggest the intention is to redevelop the land for residential purposes - in breach of the pledge not to develop the site.

Mr Salathiel's plea reads: 'Hiya everyone, thanks for reading this. We need help to live. Our family and kids need somewhere to live to raise. Our family (sic).

'Council is not providing us with the right needs so we are doing our own property up which we are entitled to do. We are sick of living in needs that is not being provided... un racial people around us.'

It has raised £50 of its £10,000 goal, including £20 from Mr Salathiel himself.

However, enforcement officers from Blaenau Gwent Council have put a halt to the project - turning up on Friday morning with a temporary stop notice because the groundworks do not have planning permission.

The notice, which will be enforced for 28 days, reads: 'The works as implemented give rise to concern to the Council regarding the stability of the land and the impact on public safety.'

The notice requires the groundworks to cease 'with immediate effect', and slam the excavations as being carried out without consideration for 'sound engineering practises' - likely to alarm local residents even more.

The site, at Cwmcrachen, has 19 pitches and was upgraded in 2008. But there is currently a waiting list, according to the council's website.

Nantyglo locals say the value of their £300,000 houses has been badly hit. They fear no one would want to buy a property just yards from the unofficial encampment.

Mrs Bell said: 'I told one of the travellers that and he just laughed and then offered me £150,000 for my place - that's the sort of people you're dealing with.'

Other residents of Porters Road were too afraid to be named for fear of reprisals from their new neighbours.

One said: 'They've painted the windows of their caravans with words that make it look like we've done it. They're trying to flip it.

'They say we are racists by calling them gypsies. One of them told us that he calls himself a gypsy but we can't call him that.

'They live beyond the law - we've told the police what's going on here but they don't want to know.'

Another woman resident said: 'We bought our house because it's a nice peaceful village with great views over the Welsh countryside.

'Now we've got a black field and a row of caravans in front of us.

'They've only been there a week but already some of us are afraid to leave our homes.'

The Council's Temporary Stop Notice - addressed to Luke Salathiel, Thommy Bryan, Brian Thomas Salathiel and Elizabeth Withy - was pinned up at the entrance to the site.

None of the individuals named on the notice was available for comment.

Blaenau-Gwent Council was unavailable to comment.

However, the authority previously told the BBC: 'We can confirm that we have been made aware of land development on a site in Nantyglo.

'We are looking into this and all associated issues as a priority in order to determine an appropriate course of action.'

Gypsies really are the nigger of Europe. I see why even European redditors hate them.

Some pix to illustrate why the pikeys should spend their GoFuckMe dosh on a geotechnical engineer:

Lmao, they have completely fucked up that stretch of land and all the buildings on it. That dirt will erode lightning fast now and when gypsy Xanadu turns into a dismal mudpit and that row of houses starts sliding down hill, the gypsies will just drive away and find their next victims. Suffer, welshies.

If it wasn't endangering the lives of others I'd say let them do it and eventually all die because of their own stupidity, unfortunately nothing will be done about this and after making the place insufferable to live for the locals they'll likely kill them too.

Fucking pikies. I've never met one and I already despise them all.

They couldn't even put up fucking cinderblock retaining walls on either side of their landscaping! The best I can hope for is that when the inevitable rapid unplanned subsidence happens the only people home are the pikies themselves.

The Welsh have a history of burning the English out of colonising holiday cottages. Gypsies are above the law - even the police won’t touch them.
The locals are right to be scared - all that land is really unstable and riddled with mine works and it gets a lot of rain. The council needs to sort it out but the average Welsh council is utterly useless. Gypsies are a plague

Bunch of white niggers turn up and start destroying their village and they just take it?
What a bunch of cucks
Unfortunately it's one of the rare occasions when the police need to get involved. Too late now alas.

A full blown gypsy invasion is the sort of things God kept out the plagues he unleashed on Egypt because there's a line.

The article touches on bits of it but it's the worst of every negative stereotype of organised crime, race grifters, illegal immigrants and more. They'll fake being targets of attacks and during the day the women and children will spread out and target the locals. The vulnerable like the elderly will be threatened, robbed or attacked publicly, children will be targeted in the same way with a side order of rape if they can get away with it, property will be vandalised, animals will be killed and indiscriminate crimes that affect everyone but the gypsies who'll be moving on like targeting infrastructure or starting fires guaranteed to spread will be committed. If the local council/police is as useless as many are they will dither about doing anything and if the locals take their own steps the gypsies will cry to the police and the internet to grift. Then at night the "men" of these invasions will go out to target those fighting back. Unless they've a vulnerable target or they can catch them alone they normally aim at their families and livelihoods. Plenty who bother the gypsies wake up the next day to find their parent's house has had the door kicked in and they've been robbed and assaulted.

There's also limits on what the law can do to them. Most of them will have prior criminal run ins but unless there's DNA or fingerprint records linking them to those is a challenge, fines will be ignored as will any sort of court compelled orders to stop certain activity. Jail or executions are the only options and I know which I favour.

Oh agreed. If you've not been around gypsies, sorry The Irish Traveller Community, you cannot fucking imagine. This Welsh place is absolutely finished. The size of the plot they've taken over looks massive; easily there will be 40, 50 vans on there. Whoever managed to sell land to a gypsy needs sectioning.

The GoFundMe:

£50 raised, of which £20 is from the head gypsy and another £20 is from "anonymous" (so probably the head gypsy again).

Spot on. If gypsies move into an area, they will be a perpetual blight. Interestingly the surnames involved (Salathiel, Bosely, Wannell) aren't Irish (and they're definitely not Welsh). Suggests they're not pikeys (Irish travellers) but gypsies. The Wannells seem to be linked to a spate of street crime in Newport (South Wales) and the Bosleys are linked to a variety of crimes and typical gypsy behaviour

The Council's Temporary Stop Notice was addressed to Luke Salathiel, Thommy Bryan, Brian Thomas Salathiel and Elizabeth Withy. I can't find anything on Luke Salathiel (which is surprising because that's a really rare name) although there's a facebook with pictures of children outside a traditional gypsy caravan (like the ones you see in movies - they don't live in those). Brian Salathiel only seems to be on some driving charges and the other two might as well be ghosts (although I'm getting some hits for a Facebook group called "House Swap Wales - Blaenau Gwent" which unsurprisingly means some of them are currently living in social housing with their rent paid for by our taxes).
The range of surnames involved should clue the naive in that this was not an attempt to make space for their "family" but instead was an attempt to start a gypsy hive like this:
aerial-view-of-a-gypsy-campsite-caravan-site-in-west-yorkshire-uk-EHBN8B.jpg
They've managed to get some of themselves an education (which is surprising) and built up an advocacy network that insists they have a right to a nomadic way of life. A permanent campsite is obviously not nomadic, but people don't like arguing with gypsies. This particular scenario is happening against the backdrop of the Welsh Ombudsman - basically since 2014 in Wales, local authorities are supposed to produce "Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessments" which works out how many gypsies are in an area and if there's a big enough campsite for all of them - and if there isn't, where to build one. The Ombudsman has found they're not doing this. Gypsies really enjoy rubbing it in people's faces when they get approval -
comingsoon.png
but also will just set up site without approval and then complain they're victims of a genocide or pogrom when people try and stop them (like in this case). In fact they'll trying to prevent people illegally setting up gypsy camps on your land is itself a pogrom:
lgbttravellers.png
(This is a twofer because gypsies and travellers hate gays, but there's some gay gypsies and travellers who manage to create a further victim narrative and the gypsies are smart enough to spot a grift when they see it). The police obviously do nothing about it, because if they try to arrest gypsies they just end up fighting the gypsies - this was nearby in Wales last year:

If you ever find yourself on a drive in the country and see a pub with a sign that says "locals only" or "regulars only", you are absolutely fine to go in, because that's the pub's plausible deniability for having a no gypsies rule (everyone local will know who the gypsies are). But also you shouldn't park there, because there's gypsies about and they will try to steal cars.
The only way to get rid of gypsies is either wait for them to move on to a new site (possibly one provided by the council) or get a group of big men to force them out, but the later is difficult because the gypsies have absolutely no issues fighting or doing reprisals and hold long grudges. Local people will sometimes resort to burning them out in the hopes the gypsies won't know who did it;
fires.png
although there's also fires at gypsy camps because they illegally burn rubbish (if police aren't going near them, environment agency people certainly aren't) and they also wire their sites without any electricians, plus they'll sometimes set each other's caravans on fire in gypsy-on-gypsy violence or sometimes because the caravan is busted and they're abandoning it.
If anyone's unclear, this isn't racism. Gypsies and travellers who get out (not easy, since most don't go to school, but possible) and abandon the gypsy way of life can completely blend in with regular people (the travellers will have an Irish accent, but can claim to be Irish). It's specifically because they're all dangerous criminals that people hate them.

What generally seems to happen with the Irish Travellers is that they go to the UK, commit various low level crimes and thuggery until things get a bit "too hot" and then they fuck off back over to Ireland for a while to let things cool off.

They'll do the same thing in Ireland and then bounce back over to the UK and repeat the process ad-infenitum.

What needs to happen is for the UK Government to simply refuse entry when they reappear at the border and just send them back to the hot water they've got themselves into.
