Woman Leaves Yu-Gi-Oh Event Because It Smelled Horrible

The woman blamed both stinky men and women duelists for forcing her early exit

A woman went viral on social media after claiming she left a Yu-Gi-Oh card game event due to how terrible many of the other players smelled.

On April 6, a person posted on X (formerly Twitter) that they were at a local Yu-Gi-Oh trading card tournament at a hobby shop in Japan. The poster claimed they ran into a woman who was competing in the event, but she left halfway through and the original poster blamed it on other players being too aggressive and unwelcoming to new players. Shortly after that post spread around the web, however, a woman on Twitter responded claiming to be the duelist who left early. And she explained it wasn’t due to poor player behavior or losing quickly. Instead, she blamed the terrible odor from other players inside the card shop.

I saw this one come around and I thought it might be me under the circumstances? I left halfway through because I couldn't stand the smell, and I'm not sad that I lost at all.

I was at a Yu-Gi-Oh! event the other day.

I'm a master duelist, and this is my first time at a Yu-Gi-Oh! I've never been to a Yu-Gi-Oh! event before.

In my area...

Even on Yu-Gi-Oh! Day.

Instructors

Or a social event.

I wondered if it would be okay to have so many Solemnity, Centurions, Snake Eyes, and VS. I was wondering if it would be okay, but as I expected, I was getting beat up.

The deck she was using was "BF".

I was worried because I wasn't used to it and the deck wasn't powerful enough...

Worst of all, she left halfway through the game.

I still think, "I hope you don't hate Yu-Gi-Oh!

If you are a man, you should be nice to women, even if it's just a little bit.

It sounds bad to say "be gentle," so I'll just say that... yes.

If it's a man, whether he's a beginner or not, I'll beat him to a pulp.

But if it's a woman...

You know...

The more female Duelists there are, the more benefits there will be for men...

As spotted by ComicBook.com, on Saturday a woman quote-tweeted the original story and claimed she was the one who left early. According to a Twitter translation, she said she left halfway through the tourney because she “couldn’t stand the smell” and added: “It’s not like I lost or was sad.”

When another user replied that her story was “funny,” she responded and said it “smelled so bad it was no laughing matter.”

Another user replied to her viral tweet, posting that the horrible odor was likely the reason the number of “female duelists” in Yu-Gi-Oh wasn’t increasing. In response, the woman clarified that there are some “stinky female duelists” but claimed the smelly men at card game events are often “in a class of their own.”

While some players and users argued that smelly duelists at events were a stereotype and the problem was being overblown, others agreed with the woman’s viral tweet and suggested that they have also left tourneys due to bad body odor.

In fact, things got so bad that in 2019, Konami—the company behind Yu-Gi-Oh—actually updated its official rules to address bad odor and body hygiene. It specifically warned that players wearing dirty clothing or who weren’t clean could be penalized. It seems that hasn’t stopped stinky players from still attending events smelling bad.

I have been to Toy Shows where sellers sell collectible toys such as star wars, transformers, gi joe, but there are also comic books, pokemon cards etc..
And the show is very crowded and mostly every time there is always an adult male with bad BO and it's so damn disgusting.
So, yeah, I can empathize with this women.

I love the smell of unwashed neckbeards in the morning

Smells like victory

5D's is one of the best spin offs from yugioh, it's pretty much this but their playing the card game on a motorcycle.
5Ds was peak Chinese cartoons, and had some of the coolest card designs, at least I thought so when I was a kid. Also duel cycles.

I think it's more like "what is it about complete shut-in autists who don't bathe that attracts them to kids card games?"
It's the fact that they have no shame about their poor hygiene and no one is forcing them to do anything about it. If they went to most other places smelling like that, they'd be asked to leave.

But at their FLGS and most tournaments, everyone else there is as socially stunted as them, so they all just accept it. And worse, if someone complains, the stinky one can pitch a fit and get the complainer in trouble.

The fact that these guys can't have the self-awareness to think "I'm going to be there all day, it's going to be hot, and I sweat like a pig... maybe I should bring some deodorant, a spare shirt or two, and maybe some body wipes."

Halfway through the day, you go clean yourself up, reapply deodorant, and change your shirt. It's not rocket science.

It's a combination of fat people and bad air circulation. Not to mention th occasional autist that shits himself
That's part of the recipe. But not all of it.

You start with an autist that doesn't shower regularly. And wears the same pair of clothes for a couple days. And either doesn't wear deodorant or wears deodorant that isn't strong enough.

THEN you make him fat, cram him in a hot room with other sweaty artists, and have him be "more active" than usual by playing games for an extended period of time.

Top it off by making him lack self-awareness and basic social skills to realize he stinks. Then you have a Yu-Gi-Oh/Smash tourney player.

Yu Gi Oh seems pretty rad nowadays. How would the Shooting Quasar Dragon do against a stinky opponent?
":geek: erm, end main one, Nibiru? Oh, chain Quasar, chain link 3 veiler target Quasar, response?"
The TCG meta currently favors mid-range decks with relatively weak boards but tons of follow-up potential, Quasar is a win-more card that requires too much investment for a mediocre interruption (Baronne has the same interruption while being a cheap synchro 10). However the OTK potential is pretty nice, maybe would be OK if you had somehow had spare Extra Deck room in a Synchron deck (which are as a whole pretty insane right now, with Revolution dragon being a free splashable Synchro 7 into AFD into any 8, Junk Speeder being Knightmare Goblin on steroids...)

My experience with MTG tournaments was much the same. Lots of smelly fat guys who took the whole thing way too seriously.

The last straw for me was some asshole playing a burn deck and acting like he didn’t want to be there. I was playing a white life gain deck and he got very salty and told me to forfeit when he realized I was going to be able to outheal his burn and win.

There were a lot of players like him

If Seto Kaiba was real, he'd smell worse than a rotting mass grave a bear shat in. He'd also be more autistic than Mark Zuckerberg.

One gaming convention I went to, the hotel staff had to go in and open the emergency exit doors to air out the room where games were being played.
The smell in there was making the air solid.
The players didn't bat an eye, just kept on with their games.
The stereotype is for a reason.

A shower takes about 15-20 minutes.
Spare a couple more minutes to brush teeth.
Bonus points for changing into clean clothes.
There, a tiny cheat code for not being one of "those" gamers.
You're welcome.

And in the case of MTG (and maybe Smash), the amount of troons at events adds on to the smell even further. I'm not sure if YGO is popular with troons or not.
