Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

By Melee elitists yeah.

Brawl is the best out of the series imo.
While tripping was an incredibly retarded mechanic, Brawl was somehow the most fun out of the whole series. I don't know how but Smash 4 and Ultimate have managed to feel stale and soulless compared to the first 3 games. Ultimate in particular has such a massive roster that it somehow managed to lose its identity altogether.

Smash 4 and Ultimate made a hard pivot into Smash’s fighting mechanics and a general hype culture. Smash is a “Platform fighter” and was considered moreso a party game, but those elements have slowly been removed come 4, whereas you can tell they were the forefront of Melee and Brawl. Melee had adventure mode, which was then expanded by Subspace. Stages were more willing to go crazy in Melee & Brawl, whereas nowadays everything is a basic travel stage or low-hazard platform.

The “Nintendo” of Smash Bros has also been increasingly downplayed in the two most recent titles. Brawl had trophies that would give descriptions of the subject, stickers that would at least tell you what game the image is from, and the chronicle which went over every Nintendo release. Ultimate gave us a downgraded version of stickers, will only tell the player the franchise, and removed everything else. There is also a lot less weirdness on the roster and stages since 4, with Ultimate not even having a retro joke pick character like G&W, R.O.B., and Duck Hunt.

not much else though, 2 galaxy games, 2 zeldas.... wii sports? brawl is pretty much accepted as the worst smash. What else?
Mario Kart Wii and Brawl are black sheep titles that are arguably the best of their series.

We actually got 3 Mario titles with 2 Galaxy games and NSBWii, which itself was a pretty good game as it came before the staleness set in.

The two Mario Sports titles, Super Sluggers and Strikers Charged, are the best Mario sports games hands down.

Kirby’s Return to Dreamland is often considered the best of the IP, and Epic Yarn is typically considered the best spin-off.

Donkey Kong Country Returns was a great revitalization of a long decayed IP.

Endless Ocean and it’s sequel are sleeper classics and the best of their weird niche of ocean-diving simulator titles. The fact that they are bringing it back to Switch shows they have some status.

Super Paper Mario is another black sheep title that is now gaining a lot of favorability as the last good Paper Mario.

I could honestly keep going. The Wii was a console with loads of good that everyone skipped:
  • Metroid Prime 3
  • Mario Fortune Street
  • Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn
  • WarioWare Smooth Moves
  • Animal Crossing City Folk
  • Punch-Out!!
  • Another Code R (outside the US)
  • Excite series
  • Rhythm Heaven Fever
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Wario Land Shake It
There is even some widely loved 3rd party titles:
  • No More Heroes 1+2
  • Sonic Colors
  • Zack & Wiki
  • Tatsunoko vs Capcom
  • Rabbids series (Has a few gems)
  • Go Vacation
  • Monster Hunter (series)
  • Epic Mickey

My favorite Pokémon generation? I like all of them for what they are, even though the games obviously need improvement in a lot of areas.
Vanilla Skyrim? Unironically good.
Simracers? For faggots too scared to just go drive a car IRL.
Videogames? Are fun. gigachad.jpg

It shouldn't be hard to incorporate standard controls into games that used motion controls. Rayman Legends did it well. The upcoming Epic Mickey remake should just use the same control scheme as the sequel WITH the option for waggle on the Switch and PC.

I'm actually optimistic for Epic Mickey despite my large backlog.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater? For faggots too scared to just go skateboard IRL.

Assassin's Creed? For faggots too scared to just go do parkour while stabbing strangers IRL.

Allowing the player to easily simulate things that are impractical to do in real life is one of the primary purposes of video games.

I'm pretty sure no state is going to let me drive around in a tank and run people over a la Arkham Knight. Or let me engage in a drag race on go-karts complete with missiles and bombs being fired at the contestants, by the contestants like in Mario Kart........
Give Florida another 5 years.

What about those that WANT to race but cannot afford it or just want to live out a fantasy that a simracer COULD provide?

I feel simulator type video games contradict the premise of video games. There's no way a video game COULD be 100% simulation without some compromise.

The Japanese suck at making video games. Western devs did it better until all the glowie propaganda took over full time during the 2010's.

JRPG's aren't roleplaying games. They are power fantasies where the cast talks AT the player the entire time and the protagonist is a gary stu/mary sue.

Visual Novels aren't video games despite being lumped in with them. They are glorified audiobooks with pictures but often lack the good narration and presentation along the likes of "Myth: The Fallen Lords Legion's Journal." and often forget that this is an interactive medium where the player needs to do more than just mash the "advance dialog" button or fuck around with the shoddy auto advance text feature and make false choices once every few hours.

Gacha "games" are just a glorified pump & dump scheme where the game ceases to exist after a short time while expecting to nickel & dime the playerbase and astroturfing across the internet about how "great" the game is. Usually they shut down after 1-2 years. Longer if the barebones lootbox simulator does well enough. There is often ZERO long term planning about letting paying customers continue to play with what they purchased after the servers go down.

Western RPG's are actual roleplaying games. They are a mixed bag of power fantasies and getting gud where the cast talks with the player most of the time. outside of scenes about third parties or talking amongst themselves like the Kotor games.

Of course there's some compromise. But it can be a good enough facsimile of the real thing that pilots and drivers and equipment operators and other people with safety-critical jobs can use simulators for job training.

It doesn't need to be flawless in order to be useful or fun in the case of sim games.

I play video games because I like to play video games, I don't want to kill turtles and crawl through sewer pipes irl
