It really threw me for a loop that these were middle schoolers. I remember when this was breaking I heard about it from some video that autoplayed that I could only hear while washing up, I thought they were talking high schoolers so it wasn't until footage of the protest played when I heard the little kid voices. Granted a high school teen should absolutely know better by this age but at the same time they're trusted with a little more autonomy so you expect some boundary pushing and for them to sort it out among themselves and their peers, to an extent at least. These poor kids shouldn't have had to have the burden of protesting to get this fixed.

We had an issue with furries at one of the schools I used to work at. They were your typical terminally-online 13-18 y/o kids, not popular or athletic, anti-social, LGBT alphabet soups, that sort of thing.

At first, no one really cared because it was just cat ears and collars, and while everyone else though it was weird, they'd really just sit in their own corner lunch table and talk, not really bothering anyone. Honestly, if they'd just stuck to that no one would have given a shit, but after a few weeks, they started meowing and barking at people walking by, using leashes to 'walk' each other, and bringing in tails, masks, even the head of a fur suit at one point. I know many of the staff had to constantly run them out of the restrooms because they'd literally hide in there to 'swap art'.

The administration stepped in once it started getting to that point. They told the worst offenders that if they didn't stop, they were going to be disciplined, up to and including suspension, and told the younger ones to knock it off. The rest of the student body took care of the rest. After the anticipated scorn and ridicule, it‘s thankfully just a weird piece of that schools history now.

This whole situation is outrage bait for the retarded culture war, and these idiot kids aren't furries. Clipping a fake tail to your pants and wearing fake fur leggings and going around trying to piss off your peers and enemies in middle school is way different than being a male homo with a fetish (or an itemized 30 page list of disgusting kinks, like some of them have) like 95% of the furry community. I've been interacting both positively and negatively with furries online (mostly negatively, for obvious reasons if you know anything about the subculture) since around 1999ish. These are just kids being assholes and being stupid as usual. And of course joining the protest to get out of classes, naturally. From what I've read and watched in this thread, this is just a failure of 2 things. Parenting foremost, and the school itself being way too permissive with "self-expression". I'm not saying this school needs some strict dress code and medieval stocks in the visiting team's endzone, but they do need to clamp down some, IMHO.

I heard some other people in this thread say this was in southern Utah, but according to the article (In A&N), it's in Payson, which is only a little south of Provo. I'll admit that I know very little about Utah socially other than it's full of Mormons and has a bunch of other strange issues.

This stuff isn't new. The only thing new is the association with furry. I haven't been to school in a decade now, but I remember even back then that you had a few of the emo kids and A few of the other weird cliques where you hide the kid that wore cat ears to school, there is a kid who wore paws to school everyday, we had a few clip-on tails, and we had a few fluffy animal boots. Shit just happened like that all the time. They bought it from Walmart and the mall. You can also probably buy it from Amazon and other places online that are very normie under very innocuous names. A fair number of parents try to trust their teenagers with a certain amount of freedom so that they don't grow up to be completely dependent upon other people by letting them go out and do things without constant supervision. So long as they aren't coming home with literal sex toys and very obvious kink wear most parents aren't going to bat an eye at it. I will be real if I saw my daughter dressing like this it would take me back to when I saw the exact same thing when I was in school. My parents made snarky comments when I was in school how little the fashion had changed and how much of it had come back. None of this is actual high quality furry stuff that you need to get from anywhere particularly weird, It's Amazon quality for less than 50 bucks the get up. The outcast always dressed like fucking morons. Sometimes The retarded kids are just retarded kids and not something deeper.

Honestly, the entire reaction of the school over this looks to me like a smaller has recently hit a critical population threshold where you start seeing some of the weirder stuff that happens with that starting to kick in and the population isn't yet large enough that you get desensitized to it. Weird stuff. Happens more in larger communities, but there's an awkward middle stage where it is big enough for the weird stuff to happen. But the community is still small enough that it is very noticeable and it gets attention. That's what this looks like to me. I remember when we had a huge panic in my high school, because right near the end of that for me was when gamergate broke out, and they decided that any kid wearing anything video game related had to be a terrorist because some fucking crime drama TV show made a statement about gamergate by making them a terrorist organization in their TV show and the staff got weirdly worried about it. It died down pretty quickly.

The protest from the kids, I protested three times in high school to get out of class. How dare they have chocolate milk but not strawberry milk. Then there is the fact that they dare to give us a removal of the hat ban but not be absolute, instead only a partial removal of the ban and instead it would not allow anything with a brim wider than 2 in on the side and nothing that was taller than 1 in off the top of your head. Everything else was fine though. This is outrageous. And don't even get me started about how important it was that we get school uniforms because the Catholic school just got cool uniforms and we want new cool uniforms in the public system. These were all actual things that I didn't give a shit about that I showed up to protest about to get out of class. The freedom and the right to protest the injustices that we see from those in power is important to our voices being heard dammit. That is definitely why I did not go to class, but instead got with a whole bunch of people with shitty signs we made 5 minutes beforehand, stuck around until the staff met their legal responsibility to mark that we were at least safely on the school property and then snuck away to risk teenage pregnancy with my girlfriend. It was definitely due to the importance of protest and not the fact that I just didn't like the majority of my classes or teachers at the time. I also definitely believed in those things and showed up for those protests despite skipping a whole bunch of the others, and it wasn't because I liked those classes and teachers. This is about the freedom of protest and being heard. Absolutely nothing else. I am sure the exact same thing is true for these kids.

Here's some dumb fucking trends that we had to deal with at my school that came and went: For a while there was a trend where a bunch of kids were dressing like Victorian gentleman, and then they would have fucking duels with canes in the halls and the library. Fucking fever dream that I had to ask my girlfriend about if it actually happened but she also remembers it and we went to the same high school. Then there was that time where we had a whole bunch of kids who went 3deep5me wearing dog collars with padlocks on them to talk about how we are all slaves and dogs to the institution, which then turned into an actual just fashion statement for a little while with none of the social commentary. That was incredibly cringe. Then there is this weird trend among certain people to go full white in everything to try and banish the satanic darkness of the Goth kids which also had a weird resurgence around then. Reminder this was the early 2010s. This was before Trump even announced his intention in the US to run for president but well after the point where Goths were actually a thing. These kids were the last millennials in the first zoomers. That's the weirdness that the weird transitional period gave us.

I want to point out all of this came and went with the staff just rolling their eyes realizing that we were retarded kids being retarded. For some reason the gamers became really bad terrorists though.

Kids like to protest to get out of class. Stupid shit comes and goes all the time, no one will remember this in a month.

It's more than likely the other way around. It wasn't too long ago a bill was presented to allow animal control to remove furries from school. It could be the community coming together to push out a small group of people. Edit: Had to double check myself, I misspoke. Utah did not introduce the animal control bill but Oklahoma did.

These are the people when I was in HS we called Nekos because generally Anime was exploding in popularity in Western culture.
