  • A brand new, high quality JRPG from Yoshitaka Murayama (Suikoden I&II) and Junko Kawano (Suikoden I&IV), in their first collaboration in 25 years.
  • A traditional 6-character battle system utilizing painstakingly created 2D sprites and gorgeous 3D backgrounds
  • A deep story with 100 characters intricately intertwined.
  • Coming to PC at minimum goal, with stretch goals to bring the game to additional platforms, including PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.

It's a Kickstarter project and they've already doubled their goal after only a few hours.

I want it to be good but a lot of 'old school' inspired JRPGs from the past couple of years have been mediocre and bland. That said, the Suikoden relation still makes me excited for it; 1 - 3 of that series are some of my favorite JRPGs.
 
I backed it though I'm not a fan of the art style. It's like some weird mix of Octopath Traveler and that strange flat mobile game look.
 
I hope it will be good but kickstarter projects have consistently resulted in trash vanity games because, believe it or not, having someone upstairs giving you hard feedback and deadlines actually does good job in making games that appeal to people beyond the devs.
 
Looking at the stretch goals, at least they are relatively sane with side content and new characters rather than huge add-ons that normally kill kickstarter projects (though why Chinese localiztion is a goal?). I am however dreading the "become an npc in the game" and whether the 100 characters will actually be varied.

Sorry bud, localization is apparently shit.
I have mixed feelings about this.

There are obvious spots (and characters) where it reads like a blue haired whale self insert - one character in particular.

*However* - the main character is written well. There have been a couple of interactions - particularly between two characters that are written exceptionally well. I'm only about 5-6 hours in but I feel like while there is damage (like in just about every localised game now) it's somewhat contained and not as bad as it could have been. That's just my general impression.

The last hour or so has really felt like a Murayama game and like a Suikoden game. I'm taking a wait and see approach before I declare it a lost cause.
 
Here's my thing: if the localization is so bad, why not just fix it? Isn't this in Unity and therefore fixable by a dedicated non-trooned out autist?

Translating (or re-translating) a video game is a huge project, especially for just some guy doing it in his off time for free. There's a reason why many such projects have languished for years before being cancelled.
 
It doesn't help that the script files aren't always readily available. I seem to recall that, at least, being a problem for the Super Robot Wars translations, since even if they had every line of dialogue written out already, it's useless if you can't put it in.

I'm not happy with the dialogue issues, but I admit I wish people were pointing out other big issues, like an apparent bug where the random encounters are related to your monitor's refresh rate, so if it's not capped by the player it'll make it harder for you to have random battles, and a secret character appears to be bugged so you can't recruit them if you don't do it right. I know the dialogue being stupid is already a problem, I wish people would point THIS out as an issue.

"Wait for the fans to fix it" is one of the worse trends in the industry. You basically tell devs that they shouldn't do shit and you'll eventually buy the game anyways after some shmuck fix it for them. The only thing you should do is voice your issue in whatever platform still available and review bomb the game, so others might also do the same.
 
The publisher announced a new patch will have a "Refinement of localised text".
We'll see what that means.
That can either be something to be happy about or a nail to the head.

I'm also in "wait and see", I really fucking want this to be good, but for now, it's only prerelease shills takes and one can't trust that and after how shit Sea of Stars ended up being even though everybody fellated it to high hell just because it looked very pretty, I'm waiting for word of mouth in a month or 3 when things have settled. I'm still very much in the middle of Unicorn Overlord, so it's not like I need a new game on my lap yet.
