When it comes to anything online women also used to and still do pretend to be men just because of how hard men sperg out if there is a girl present in their online game. Tell you what, if a moid manga author did the same thing, swapped the males to females and the female to a male he'd have an anime deal by the first volume. In fact, there was a meme a while back about men suddenly "getting it" when Meyer did a genderswap story involving, for all intents and purposes, the same characters and the same plot.

Yeah, I'll accept your point on that one, looking back it probably is one of the poorer examples. But the films are funny bad, I had a great time watching those and having a laugh at them instead of seething at them. Plus there was a very particular brand of flak that Twilight got that can't be entirely divorced from misogyny imo. I still think there is something to the comparative reactions of female wish fulfilment versus male wish fulfilment fiction. I think both do just get given funny looks and left alone, except for their target audience, like those first person romance books that have the strapping hunks on the covers versus isekai harem anime.
