Jesting aside, I think Nick was play-acting at his wholesome image (even to his family), then he felt he could be 'real'. That backfired immensely, and now he has burned his local social network, his professional network, and his audience's trust so he thinks he needs some 'genuine' angle to claw some of his success back, but he cannot force himself to get back in the kink closet anymore. Fair is fair, I think people would cry 'HYPOCRISY!' if he tried the trad grift again, so he is stuck in the middle and failing to attract the degenerates or the boomer trads.
