Knowing absolute morons are more successful than he is, despite believing his ideals are superior, has gotta sting.
This is why he is failing. No one cares about comics, July and AZ are selling a community. That is what comicsgate used to be about too. But once they got spanked by July and Ethan's ego took a hit he moved the goalpoats. Comics exist only because of a form a welfare; be it corporate or fan supported. The vast majority of people who buy these books will never removed them from the bags let alone read them. It's far better to get a book out on time than to delay it for years.
