President Joe Biden on Wednesday called close US ally Japan “xenophobic” at a Washington, D.C., fundraiser, just weeks after lauding the US-Japan alliance at a state dinner.

The president made the remark at the off-camera event while arguing that Japan, along with India, Russia and China, would perform better economically if the countries embraced immigration more.

“You know, one of the reasons why our economy is growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants. We look to – the reason – look, think about it – why is China stalling so badly economically? Why is Japan having trouble? Why is Russia? Why is India? Because they’re xenophobic. They don’t want immigrants,” Biden said, according to an official White House transcript released Thursday. An initial report of Biden’s comments that was released by pool reporters did not include India in the list of countries he mentioned.

On Thursday, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the president was attempting to make a larger point when he described Japan and India as “xenophobic.”

“He was saying that when it comes to who we are as a nation, we are a nation of immigrants, that is in our DNA,” she told reporters aboard Air Force One, adding later Biden was making a “broad comment” in his comments about Japan and India.

She described the US-Japan relationship as “important” and “enduring” that would continue, despite Biden’s comment. As for whether the president would make similar remarks going forward, she said: “That is up to the president.”

Earlier in the day, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said he wasn’t aware of any communications between the White House and the governments of Japan or India.

“President Biden values the capabilities that they bring across the spectrum on a range of issues, not just security related,” Kirby said.

Biden had similarly cast Japan, Russia and China as “xenophobic” during an interview with a Spanish language radio station in March.

“The Japanese, the Chinese, they’re xenophobic, they don’t want any – the Russians, they don’t want to have people, other than Russians, Chinese, or Japanese,” the president said at the time.

The latest critique of Japan comes less than a month after he hosted Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for a state visit and nearly a year after the president hosted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his own state visit. Biden has leaned on improving relations with both Japan and India as important counterweights to China’s growing global influence.

At the state dinner held at the White House in April, Biden said Japan and the US share “the same values, the same commitment to democracy and freedom to dignity.”

“And today without question, our alliance is literally stronger than it has ever been,” Biden said during the dinner.

Japan has long experienced a demographic crisis with far-reaching consequences for the country’s workforce and economy. Japan and other East Asian nations have largely shied away from using immigration to bolster their populations.

The president’s comments also come as he’s facing political pressure at home over his own immigration policies amid strained resources to deal with an influx of migrants and sharp Republicans criticism.

Observant ethnostate that doesn't want to fall into the "unlimited migration from turd world places"-trap

Biden is an uneducated white liberal and by virtue of that alone should shut the fuck up.

In what universe does India of all places need mass immigration? They've got some of the most population-dense regions in the entire world and they're not contracting demographically the same way Japan or even China are. I don't understand this mindset. It's like they think immigrants are magical creatures that bring supernatural prosperity wherever they go.
Perhaps Biden's handlers were talking about India's caste system? Although that wouldn't be xenophobia.

Japan doesn't need more immigrants.

Japan needs more aircraft carriers, submarines and nuclear warheads.
What Japan really needs is its government getting the fuck out of every Japanese persons Business.

Japan is literally a proto-cyberpunk dystopia with massive debt to GDP driven by government intervention in every nook and cranny, monopolies (that exist because they work with the government) price gouging at every turn, an oppressive police force with draconian laws that ruins peoples lives over stealing a single cup of coffee (yes this actually happened) and so much more.

If India is the best example of the future of most developing nations, Japan is the best example of the future of most developed nations. Both are grim.

Japan-yes, its an island nation where it's literally been the policy for over a millennia. They don't even like ethnically pure japs from Peru, Brazil or Hawaii because they aren't from Japan.
China- lol no they have a ton of ethnics, Han Chinese may be the dominant one right now but it wasn't always. And a good portion, not including Uighurs, are Muslims.
Russia-he's fucking brain dead, Russia has over 200 separate ethnic minorities, many who are also Muslims, Buddhists and a kind of indigenous shamanism. Russia is simply the largest demographic. They have a small number of Africans too so idk wtf he's on about.
India-Nigger the place is busting at the seams, where the fuck would they put them? And there are also lots of of various types in addition to Hindus. There are Buddhists, Muslims and Christians.
India currently has about 10 separate separatist terrorist organizations blowing buildings up but that doesn't make the news because India is allowed to violently oppress its racial minorities

Japan should just leave the American sphere.
America willingly or unwillingly leaving its allies to fend for themselves is the sort of thing that gives military planners in China, Russia and beyond night terrors. The politicians may have their own views that they espouse to the general public, but the politicians are morons. When America withdraws, suddenly the other great powers and several middle powers have to worry about multiple different military forces and interests around them rather than a mostly unified force backed by the United States.

The United States, meanwhile and despite whatever problems it may have will still be bordered by two insignificant powers to the North and South and a pair of oceans to the East and West.

What does Japan do when the US nuclear umbrella is gone and the nearest carrier group is somewhere around Hawaii or Guam? It's easy enough for them to amend that so-called pacifist constitution of theirs and retrofit those "helicopter carriers" they in abundance. Nuclear weapons are trivial. Moreover, what about those long-time super best friends Germany, France and the United Kingdom? Surely they'll all have similarly aligned interests and will in no way start stepping on the toes of the other. And then you've got players like India and Pakistan in the mix. The Middle East is a never ending shitshow which has become armed to the teeth, but for all intents and purposes hasn't gone medieval unless the CIA is the backer.

And even the Americans may have to contend with new ideas and posturing coming out of Brazil; though if they're smart, the New World nations would and should have the backs of one another. We don't exactly need the Old World or its problems over here, we have plenty of our own. Maybe the United States should be a little nicer to them.

US draw down is going to be entertaining as fuck. And I'm sure as sugar glad that I don't live in Europe. That place is fucked.

I don't understand this mindset. It's like they think immigrants are magical creatures that bring supernatural prosperity wherever they go.
The elites live in a bubble where they think illegal immigrants = cheap labor. Can't have cheap labor with the native pop because they want fair shake and don't like being abused by their overlords at work.
