Console bros have we lost?
It's somewhat amusing that console bros still thought they were in the running. What console exclusive games have there even been in the last few years that actually did insanely well? is it just Zelda?
That said the PSN requirement for Helldivers 2, a game that I don't even play, sounds like utter horseshit. The last thing I ever thought about was how nice it was to sign in to my Uplay account to play games I bought on Steam.

Tbf the competition has been pathetic. What new game anywhere in the last few years has been worth getting excited over? I've been seeing video after video of people coping that "actually cyberpunk was ALWAYS good!" or "no really, this indie glorified tech demo everyone will forget in a month TOTALLY changes everything!" Everything has just been rehashes, remakes, and indie fads.

At least I can say I got my fill of Helldivers. It never deserved all the praise it got when the game is also pay to win. Premium warbonds is a shit idea, punishing players who aren't devoted solely to their game since you need a constant grind to afford them every few weeks when they release a new one. And instead of pricing the warbond as it should be, they lock your own super credits in the warbond itself so you have to spend more time and medals to get back what you already had. I also despise having two targeting reticles. There's a reason game's don't normally make your character aim slower than you, because it feels awful to control. The game doesn't beneift from it at all other than trying to force funny clips of people accidently shooting each other. Definitely not the worst game, but I wont be sad if it were gone.

It can't be coincidence that both MS and Sony are throwing their weight behind PC. The pair of them have effectively killed the console industry and are doing a 'weekend at bernies' to pretend to investors that everything is A-OK.
Don’t get me wrong, Microsoft and Sony didn’t help matters by shitting things up, but the death of consoles is basically inevitable with the increase in power of personal computers. Consoles made sense back in the day when they could offer a better price-to-performance ratio than PC’s, but that’s simply not the case anymore.

The only real advantage that a non-handheld console offers over a PC is couch co-op, but nobody really does couch co-op outside of small indie games anymore and Nintendo has that market cornered with the Switch.

Can you still play the PC version of HD2 for free or is it now subscription locked like the PS5 version?

I suppose that's a fair point. It's genuinely over for the Nu-Gamer. Using the no demake (read: rehash where they make everything worse), "remake" and indie tech demo (read: perpetual early access game) criteria I'd say there are no games worth getting excited over. Certainly none that I've cared about anyways.

Almost everything from a console perspective is an unnecessary sacrifice. You have to pay to play your games online with a subscription service. You miss out on Xbox titles which, unless I'm mistaken, are almost all on PC and new releases come to PC anyways. You miss out on the entire ecosystem of PC games and the indie games, mods, et cetera. Then you also miss out on emulation and shit. In the past consoles were definitely worth it if you had a certain game you wanted to play (also Windows Live fucking sucked and still sucks) but now it just doesn't make sense. The death of couch co-op also was a travesty. I remember trying to play 4 player multiplayer games becoming harder and harder as less and less games supported it. Then even two player games became difficult to play with someone. Now I don't even know if they still make them outside of a very slim picking. Are the new Call of Duty games even capable of split screen play?
So this means if I have the PS5 version of H2 I can get the steam version for free, right?

Right?

Right?
I wish this was how it worked, not sure how it'd look in legalese to be able to transfer a "video game license" between two different marketplaces. You can't even do that for Uplay games. You buy it on Steam and then upon launch you have to launch the Uplay client and sign in. I presume that's how H2 works now, you have to sign in to PSN just because fuck you.
PC Master Race Bros, we have finally won....

but at what cost?
I'd sooner say we all lost with the costs we're accruing here.

literally not a big one, considering modern APUs and integrated graphics like the radeon 780m can run cyberpunk at 1080p 70fps and the low settings are indistinguishable from ultra

modern consoles are overpriced and absolutely overkill for just playing games so i enjoy the fact inexpensive PCs without a graphics card being able to play old games at really high fps and modern games at a respectable fps will be the future

not to mention the 780m has access to fluid motion frames and Radeon super resolution from the driver so you could technically double the fps in cyberpunk or any demanding game

Yeah, really see no reason to buy a console unless there is a kid involved and you don't want to shell out $1000+ for gaming computer. Even $800+ can do most of the gaming nowadays. Back when personal computer was utter shit, consoles were excellent. Plus there is just too many way to game including phone which is basically $1000+ anyway.

Helldivers 2 was always pretty up front about the account linking requirement, I think people were assuming it was optional because it wasn't enforced. but I believe that lack of enforcement was due to a bug whose fixing was deprioritized in favor of fixing the game itself. however, Helldivers 2's online infrastructure is ultimately designed to be linked to PSN, because, for one - as I understand it - PSN is the service they use to ban hackers and griefers and whatnot. I wonder if the game's network issues (such as the in-game friend list breaking down) is related. either way, I get the sense that fixing the PSN account enforcement is linked to fixing some other issues with the game, but the devs were putting it off as long as they could. their announcements on the subject have been very apologetic.

personally, I'm extremely put off by this move, but it doesn't surprise me. Helldivers 2 is a game I very reluctantly bought and only because my friend circle was begging me to come along. I don't get along with live service games generally, and the Korean anti-cheat spyware suite very much put me off, but since I play on Linux it can only spy on the wine kernel (lol) and for some reason HD2 is one of the few games that's okay with that. it wouldn't surprise me if that changed in the future as well. but at this point, my friends and I have all played the game to death and gotten about all we're going to get out of it. we've all kind of informally agreed that we're ready to just uninstall it and not look back if they don't reverse course on this policy. after all, it has some extremely glaring problems with the basic game design that have gone unacknowledged since launch in favor of just pushing out new content (such as enemy patrols spawning directly next to you in your blind spots) that make the game tedious to play if you're having bad luck that night.

there are plenty of other multiplayer games out there to enjoy with friends. I hear Vermintide II just recently got an update.

brother, only Sony requires you to pay a subscription on top of your subscription for permission to play online games.

I put together a pretty stout gaming computer with used parts in February for $500. As ludicrous as it sounds, PC components have become like the automobile market - a year old GPU will continue to be perfectly good for many years (look at how long the GTX 1080 has remained relevant) and you avoid the massive price premium and depreciation that comes with buying new.

>scalpers buy up all the consoles even years into release
>extremely limited number of interesting games, let alone exclusives, with most of them coming out years into the console's life
>additional shitty behavior by company causes further problems

The PS5 is going to be an interesting case study in the gaming industry for what exactly not to do when releasing a new console.

This is one of the major problems console warfags keep ignoring. That, and how even if people wanted to buy a new system, they most likely can't afford it because of how tight money is now.

No, it's also Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, and Mario. For as scummy as a company as Nintendo is, they do at least have an audience, and a few exclusive franchises that they can always comfortably rely on to make them a lot of money.
