On the 24th June 1812, Napoleon's "Grand Armee" crossed the Niemen river into Russia, with the aim of forcing Russia's compliance with Napoleon's "Continental System", an arrangement of trade embargoes and mercantilist cartels designed to cripple the British Empire's economy and allow France to supplant it as the dominant global power. Napoleon's army consisted of half a million men, outnumbering his opponents' by 2-3 times. But by the time it reached Moscow, it consisted of barely 100,000 combat-capable men. Finding Moscow burned to the ground, and facing starvation, they returned home. Napoleon's losses out of his initial 500,000 men were estimated at 380,000 killed with another 100,000 wounded or otherwise incapacitated, an attrition rate of 96%, one of the highest in the history of warfare. Napoleon never lost a battle in this campaign, with the overwhelming majority of his losses coming from the cold, starvation and disease in the vicious Russian winter.
