Sorry straight white men, Doctor Who was never made for you

Article | Archive

From the moment I saw Ncuti Gatwa dancing the night away in a bright outfit during the 2023 Christmas special, I knew I would fall in love with his iteration of The Doctor.

Not everyone was as excited by such an unapologetically queer Black Doctor Who though. A vocal contingent of keyboard warriors took to social media to claim the show had gone too ‘woke’.

From arguing that the show has been ‘torn apart by woke ideologues’ to creating their own social media trend #RIPDoctorWho, you don’t need to go far to find the litany of tired complaints.

But I’d argue that the show has always been socially-progressive and inclusive.

I started watching the show during David Tennant’s run as the 10th Doctor over 15 years ago, and immediately fell in love with the beautiful themes of found family, combined with the captivating space-and-time adventures. I never looked back.

Over the past 60 years, the iconic British TV show has cultivated a devoted fanbase – following the timey-wimey adventures of an alien known as the Doctor and his human companion in the TARDIS.

In a nutshell, there is no world too crazy, time too far, or creature too strange. Not even the end of the universe is the limit.

So for a show so versatile, and with fluidity so naturally imbued into its bones, it’s truly baffling that a non-straight, non-white Doctor feels so unbelievable to so many people.

It’s not the first time this ‘woke’ accusation has been levelled at the show.

Ncuti’s predecessor Jodie Whittaker (the 13th Doctor) battled intense public scrutiny as the first woman to take over the beloved role. Angry viewers similarly accused the show of pandering to woke times, causing Jodie to tell the press ‘it’s terrifying that a woman being given a particular job can cause so much rage’.

Now Ncuti has been forced to justify his place in the sci-fi series since news of his casting in May 2022.

In a recent interview with Attitude, the Sex Education star has spoken about the irrelevance of trolls: ‘You are so angry over something so inconsequential that you can’t be an interesting person. You can’t have much in your life.’

But the bigoted straight white men who have spiralled into a meltdown clearly haven’t been paying attention to the reboot’s rich and ever-evolving history of multiculturalism and LGBTQ+ inclusion.

When Queer As Folk creator, Russell T Davies, brought Doctor Who back in 2005 it was clear from the get-go that this is a show for all the outcasts in society.

Class commentary was placed front and centre through Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) and her mum Jackie who lived on a London council estate. And left-wing sentiment has been a common thread throughout the series.

In this season, viewers were introduced to queer companion Captain Jack Harkness (who shared a same-sex kiss with The Doctor in the season finale on primetime TV as far back as 2005).

Alongside the steady drip of LGBTQ+ side characters, in 2008 Freema Agyeman made history as the first full-time Black female companion, Martha Jones. One episode (Family of Blood) sees her proving her worth as a Black female Doctor while trapped in the past.

At the time, Agyeman too faced racist backlash from the public, which she later revealed: ‘What I didn’t anticipate – and maybe I was naïve – was the racism from certain sectors of the fanbase… yeah, I couldn’t rationalise that.’

Since the early reboot days the ‘woke’ momentum has only picked up, and with it the accuracy of the representation.

Behind the scenes, screenwriters such as Vinay Patel and Malorie Blackman have penned historic stories about partition and the civil rights movement. While Segun Akinola did a tenure as Doctor Who composer from 2018 to 2022.

On screen in recent years – under the helm of showrunners Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall – we’ve seen a South Asian Master (the Doctor’s recurring arch-nemesis) played by Sacha Dhawan and Jo Martin magnificently embodying the Fugitive Doctor.

When did Disney get ahold of Dr.Who?
In order to get RTD to come back (as he was never going to take the show away from Chinball unless such a deal came along out of desperation from BBC, one so good that even Chinball himself would tell RTD he was crazy not to take it), they basically licensed the show to RTD's production company rather than re-hiring RTD to work for the BBC in-house to run the show.

Basically, RTD "rented" the show from the BBC, for X-Number of years to run it as he sees fit with only barebones restrictions on what he can do with the franchise and the downside being, that RTD now has to basically pay for the budget for the show as a tradeoff for BBC renting the show out to RTD.

It's why the current season got rebooted back to season one designation (because it's now an independent production with RTD paying as part of the licensing deal, the right to the OG series and revival series lore) and why Disney got involved. RTD doesn't have the cash on hand personally to finance a Doctor Who show with the level of SFX and production values that he considers to be required to make the show in the current year (as RTD was a huge optics fag about making Doctor Who not looking cheap ala the original series).

Hence Disney getting involved.

In exchange for effectively paying for the show's budget, RTD gave the show's foreign distribution (including the very important US rights) to Disney; who has in turn put it on Disney+ as yet another exclusive show rather than regular TV and demanding it run before the UK TV broadcast (of which BBC retained the rights to as part of their deal with RTD) so Americans get to see it first.

Hence why RTD is shitting on UK fans who are upset that the UK TV broadcast is now going to be behind the rest of the world seeing the show on Disney+; he now has access to the Disney checkbook and that means he now has a budget much bigger than what he had under the BBC during his original run. He also, in Disney, has woke people who are in lockstep with him politically and most likely encouraged him to shit on fans of the show on the basis that "you're with Disney and the mouse will NEVER go broke!" egomania.

Hey folx! Remember when we made Dr. Who a woman and you all hated it? Well now he's a literal niggerfaggot!
RTD did this doubling down because he is BFFs with Chinball and is insanely defensive of any criticism to his hack BFF friend. And Tennant came back because A. he's been trooning out his own kid to advance his career so coming back in a story where we find out that Donna Noble has a tranny son panders to his ego and B. to help RTD gaslight fans who walked away under Chinball to come back, since unfucking Donna Noble from her mindwipe is the only storyline RTD can pull out of his ass to get old time fans to come back.

Name one straight British man.
You deserve troons.

I get British men tend to be fops, but it's a sci-fi series of old, which was aimed at men as a male fantasy about adventure, advancement of mankind, and the conflict that ensues
And wearing interesting stuff before faggots succeded in claiming it all for themselves.

Yeah, don't bring Jodie Whittaker into this, she was actually great in the role.

Look, Doctor Who needs another long sleep before another revival. The Disney influence is so unpopular with the adult fans - who are the ones that keep the ratings up and the money coming in for BBC Worldwide - that this is going to die on its arse. And it's the writing that is going to kill this series. The early feedback has been diabolical.

Send the Doctor back to the Tardis for another ten, fifteen years. In fact just wait until Ty Tennant is old enough to be a third generation Time Lord. We all want to see that.

I'm not a fucking racist. I have nothing automatically against a black doctor, providing the guy can act and has charisma and the show keeps on being about kickass space adventures and not constant lectures about the evils of racism. The new guy has gone into "anyone who complains about me is a fucking racist!" mode so I'm not even going to check out a single episode of his, even out of morbid curiosity.

Do you know who would make a good black doctor? Richard Ayoade. The black nerd from the IT crowd, if you're unaware. He was hilarious.

If anybody said this about gays in regards to any show the gay community would go batshit and scream discrimination and gay erasure. Look how mental they get if a gay character gets killed off or there isn't one included in the cast

Chris Ecceleston was the only good doctor in recent history, he was sour cranky and a fucking ugly britbong, and i loved him for it (he is also a phenomenal actor).

I'm not even a Dr Who fan i just really enjoyed that season, obviously what ever this abomination is i hope it goes up in flames like everything else Disney touches.

I remember actually being excited for her as The Doctor after burning out on Matt Smith and mostly skipping Capaldi. I didn’t have a problem with the body-regenerating alien becoming a woman, and I was interested in seeing how having a female Doctor affected the story.

Then, in the first episode we’re greeted with an adult black retard trying and failing to learn to ride a bike. How this wasn’t immediately recognized as offensive is beyond me. The next few episodes I watched were obviously just intended as a vehicle for The Message and I gave up, and from what I’ve gathered it only got worse.

It’s the first time I felt a tv series was being intentionally vindictive towards the audience.

Used to watch some of the older series, mostly Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy. It was entertaining enough, but clearly meant for a younger crowd so I grew out of it by my teen years.

Never could get into the revival. Just seemed like a bunch of prissy femmy guys for the (presumably) fat female audience to soak their panties over. Doesn’t look like I missed much.

Not good enough! Give us a non-binary black pooner with a Welsh accent!!!
Change black to Indian and you have a new Woke Winner! Somebody call Netflix!

Even the earliest episodes were "Discrimination is bad, segregation is bad, racism is bad, we're all human beings so why can't we come together and live peacefully?".
That crap has been in science fiction since the genre first appeared. Seriously go and read collections of sci-fi stories, comics, etc. from any era and you will find tons of preaching about how terrible humans are in general. I love a good sci-fi story but I hate that shit.

Douglas Adams wrote fan scripts for Dr Who!
Douglas Adams was a script editor for Doctor Who and wrote a few episodes himself. (Shada and the Pirate Planet come to mind).

As far as I am concerned, Doctor Who ended after the first era and Sylvester McCoy was the last Doctor. Fight me.

Also the Paul McGann movie is pretty decent IF you view it as a random sci-fi movie and NOT part of Doctor Who.

It's funny, I was listening to Drinker Chaser's podcast just today and one of the guests pointed out that the bulk of modern sci-fi (and increasingly modern television) is incapable of being black-and-white - as in, morality can only be subjective and there is no dimension of objective right or wrong. Science fiction so often contains no actual science as opposed to social science.

That was the problem with Jodie Wittaker's Doctor Who: with few exceptions, the episodes were so much less interested in the premise of adventuring through time and the literally infinite possibilities of it than they were using the premise as a vehicle for a brand of modern social commentary that had already established a reputation of being ham-fisted and trite. It had gone from say, using the Daleks as an analogous exploration of race purity as an ideology to 'a white supremacist from the future is here to kill Rosa Parks."

Ncuti is imo too young and fuckboyish. The doctor is best when he’s an otherworldly sage, experiencing humanity’s craziness but unattached to it. Idris could sell us a high quality “black” doctor and make the radiate thank him for it. Also, I agree that Missy was a phenomenal counter to the doctor—two exceptionally powerful beings playing universal chess with 8 billion pawns. I don’t know of she executed will because I had long since stopped watching by then.

if I want gay content, I’ll watch RWRB or that new one with the king and his “friend”—I’ll never go to doctor who for that because it has no business there. Also RTD is responsive for decades of retarded white women fetishizing gay culture due to QAF. fuck him.

What this guy said. Every word. No fight.

What a retarded article. Was this written on a playground by a school child or something? This is the argumentative equivalent of sticking your finger in your ear and insisting that reality is really the way you want it to be. i.e. Cope

But I was told that the reason everything today has to be made for niggers and fags was because everything up until now was only made for straight white men and now it’s their turn? Which is it?

Whatever way works best for them in the moment. Just like all progressive/leftist/identity based ideology.
