The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

I've heard on the rumour mill that Charles is quietly someone who enjoys woodwork as a hobby, nothing major but like box making, and he's surprisingly knowledgeable at Green Woodworking an woodland crafts in general but that might also stem from his love of forestry.

I've worked on a few projects he's been involved in funding through a charity or privately and he always insists on the techniques used are as traditional as possible for the project, so I'd give that rumour some more legs than I normally wood.

Charles is a patron and promoter of capital T Traditionalism. This article is a little weirdly written but the author is a serious scholar and has written a very good and accessible book about Traditionalism.

This does not mean he is smart. He is not smart.

I work with a few organisations he works an sponsors directly - part of my education was funded by him I am very aware of how much he is into craft an skill preservation.

capital T Traditionalism is a religious ideology. It includes a belief in the spiritual value of handcrafts. It's not about craft and skill preservation as something inherently valuable, it's rooted in a set of beliefs about crafts as being how the lower orders are properly aligned to the transcendent.

I know that sounds crazy but that's actually what Prince Charles believes. He is the major patron of the Temenos Academy and of neoPlatonic scholars like John Dillon.

lol I mean King Charles I forgot

You forgot the best bit, that Meghan looks white as fuck in all the publicity photos even when stood next to ginger Harry.
Well, it depends on how she’s posed, doesn’t it? Her front is slathered in bronzer but she forgot to do her back—it’s blinding white in the Nigerian sun. 😀😀

Meg’s should hurry home and consult Diana’s ghost some more. I think Diana would be only too happy to advise Meg right back into the gutter.

I suppose it's supposed to represent him stoically enduring the fires of Hell? :lit:
Who did this? What kind of cucked country allows this kind of shit portrait to be drawn of their dying King? Why not just have Andres Serrano do a "Piss Chuck" portrait of him drowning in piss? What the fuck is this shit?
"Paint something traditional, maybe a period piece" - King Charles III, probably.
I see what you did there.

Also fuck this guy. He had Princess Di as a wife and he cheated on her. With a horse, on top of that. What an absolute faggot, and this portrait, that he apparently chose, and looks like absolute shit, like some shock piece a New York faggot who died of AIDS in the '80s would have done, is his legacy. A portrait of him burning in Hell.

This shit looks like something Podesta would have in his collection.

It's a weird portrait, but it was started when Charles was Prince. They probably didn't have the heart to cancel it when he got his promotion, so it was a coincidence it was his first official portrait as King. It would have just been some random painting in a hall in Highgrove. No idea why it took 3 years.

Also he loves the horse. Just because Diana was hot didn't mean they were compatible. They were forced together. If he continued to cheat and bang young hot chicks that would be one thing, but I've never heard he cheated on Camilla.

It looks like something out of Disco Elysium.

Edit: I don’t even really object to the actual style of it. The red is just about the worst colour they could have gone with.

The red is a weird choice. A royal blue would have been better.
He is a Traditionalist and frankly, it’s one of the things I like about him. His campaign for wool has done a lot of positive stuff for the British wool industries, from carpets to the really fine stuff and tweeds etc. yeah he probably does see it as the commoners but he’s the king , it’s not like he’s had any kind of normality or grounding. I’m Ok with his being a traditionalist regardless of why he is - we badly need a figurehead for keeping certain skills and industries alive, it’s to be lauded.
Very amused at Megs - ‘yeah I know I’m away from my kids for Mother’s Day but really I’m mother to the world’ is not a role she does well. The skimpy outfits in a Muslim country are also an eye opener, talk about tone deaf.
And where is Kate? I hope she’s got her feet up with a cup of tea and doing some gentle pottering in the garden.
