Turns out, no. They use a special type of fermentation called "lacto fermentation". No yeast required.

From what I've read, they have to do a balancing act of making the brine salty enough that it kills the bad bacteria, but not too salty so it doesn't kill the bacteria actually doing the fermentation.

I've no idea if this is common for Let's Play thumbnails from successful people, but them reusing the same poses for their little thumbail cartoons just oozes laziness.

Game Grumps was well known to do this style of thumbnail, and actually got significant backlash when they stopped, because they were useful for knowing what episode/series it was, as well as the "Grump Heads" being brand recognition at this point. OneyPlays (the better LP channel) Also does this, but Oney actually draws the thumbnails himself, or sometimes even makes models in blender, just for the thumbnail.
