DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi suffered a “hard landing” on Sunday, Iranian state television reported, without immediately elaborating.

Raisi was traveling in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. State TV said the incident happened near Jolfa, a city on the border with with the nation of Azerbaijan, some 600 kilometers (375 miles) northwest of the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Rescuers were attempting to reach the site, state TV said, but had been hampered by poor weather condition in the area. There had been heavy rain reported with some wind.

Raisi had been in Azerbaijan early Sunday to inaugurate a dam with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev. The dam is the third one that the two nations built on the Aras River.

Iran flies a variety of helicopters in the country, but international sanctions make it difficult to obtain parts for them. Its military air fleet also largely dates back to before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Raisi, 63, is a hard-liner who formerly led the country’s judiciary. He is viewed as a protégé of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and some analysts have suggested he could replace the 85-year-old leader after his death or resignation from the role.

Raisi won Iran's 2021 presidential election, a vote that saw the lowest turnout in the Islamic Republic’s history. Raisi is sanctioned by the U.S. in part over his involvement in the mass execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988 at the end of the bloody Iran-Iraq war.

Under Raisi, Iran now enriches uranium at nearly weapons-grade levels and hampers international inspections. Iran has armed Russia in its war on Ukraine, as well as launched a massive drone-and-missile attack on Israel amid its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It also has continued arming proxy groups in the Mideast, like Yemen's Houthi rebels and Lebanon's Hezbollah.

Helicopter carrying Iranian President Raisi crashes, local media reports

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi crashed while visiting a northern region and his condition is currently unknown, Iranian state news agency IRNA reported Sunday.

The aircraft, which was also carrying Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, came down in East Azerbaijan Province and emergency crews have so far been unable to reach it due to foggy conditions, IRNA said. It is unclear what the exact status is of Raisi’s helicopter.

Twenty rescue teams and drones have been sent to the area where the helicopter came down.

The pair along with a group of dignitaries were onboard the helicopter returning from a ceremony for an opening of a dam on Iran’s border with Azerbaijan when it “crashed upon landing in Varzaqan region on Sunday,” IRNA English reported.

“20 rescue teams and drones have been sent to the area, but due to the impassability of the area, its mountainous and forest conditions, as well as unfavorable weather conditions, especially heavy fog, the search and rescue operation will take time,” IRNA said.

IRNA also reported, citing locals, the helicopter crashed in the Dizmar Forest area between the villages of Ozi and Pir Davood. Residents in northern Varzeqan, East Azerbaijan Province, said they heard noises from the area, it added.

Iran’s interior minister Ahmad Vahidi said one of the helicopters was forced to make a hard landing due to foggy weather conditions.

“Now different rescue groups are moving towards the area but given that it is foggy and the unsuitable weather and the conditions it may take some time until they reach where the helicopter is,” said Vahidi during a televised address posted on Telegram by Iranian state news agency IRNA.

He added that there had been some contact with the passengers on the helicopter, “but given the area is a bit complicated, making contact is difficult and we are waiting inshallah for rescue groups to quickly reach the location of this accident where the helicopter is and give us more information.”

“From the beginning of this incident being reported regarding the President’s helicopter, Red Crescent Relief Forces and auxiliary military and law enforcement forces have started a widespread effort to find this helicopter,” Tasnim news agency reported.

“Some of the president’s companions on this helicopter were able to communicate with Central Headquarters, raising hopes that the incident could have ended without casualties,” Tasnim added.

The helicopter was part of a convoy of three helicopters. Two of those helicopters were carrying ministers and officials who arrived at their destination safely, according to Tasnim.

Correction: This story has been updated to correct that the reported incident took place in East Azerbaijan Province of Iran.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

PressTV saying there were no communications from the helicopter during or after the crash, the governor of the province was talking out his butt
I imagine it would be harder to find a new line cook than a new President of Iran.
This guy was like the Lord High Executioner of the Islamic Revolution when they were purging all the Shah's people and was rumored to be the number one guy to replace Khameini when he dies. Not everyone working for a dictatorship is a nobody who can be replaced with another nobody

It's not really a big deal since the president has less power than the Ayatollah and top military generals.
An Iranian President is indeed largely a performative role, but the jurist Raisi was envisaged as a future Supreme Leader and in terms of the clerical state was highly qualified. The helicopter was decades old and the weather was bad, so it all seems very stupid.

I see bad weather, rain and fog, mentioned in many articles about this. When will richfags learn that your helicopter should stay on the ground when the weather is bad? Didn't Kobe teach them this lesson?
Yeah there are a few things in the reporting of this story that raise red flags.

"The Helicopter was forced to make a hard landing due to dense fog"

Is an idiotic way of saying "the helicopter flew into the side of a mountain in dense fog". Which is not really a "hard landing" and is usually 100% fatal to all involved.

I'm sure it takes a very specific skill set to tell one guy to kill a different guy.

The Inshallah frame of mind is a pathway to many decisions that people would find retarded.
The biggest thing Westerners don't understand about Muslims is how powerful a guiding principal Inshallah is and how it motivates so much of the retarded shit those people are always doing.

"Hey, drifting at 120 mph on these roads lined with a bunch of people might be a bad idea"

"Inshallah bro"

*5 people are ejected from the vehicle as it rolls over a dozen spectators"

"ALLAH ACKBAR"
