Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

There's always some cunt bitching about things being "too slow" for their dopamine-fried brain.
Literally the whole point of video games is to create an experience that artificially hijacks the pleasure centers of your brain. There's no other reason a particular series of flashing pixels on a screen should make you feel anything.

It doesn't have to be slow and laborious, just that I do want to see my character picking up things, moving around, it's not 1990 anymore.
I don't give a shit about seeing my character pick things up if it makes picking things up into a tedious chore. Fun should always be the driving ethos of video games, not verisimilitude. Realism is being able to open up every individual sock drawer in Shenmue and the only enjoyment anyone gets out of that is imagining the millions of dollars that were burned on something so pointless.

I've been playing a lot of Destiny 2 lately, so here's a relevant opinion
>Sunsetting, which is removing old content to make room for new stuff, is universally loathed
>Bungie announces that due to "engine changes" they'll never have to do it again
>Translation: People aren't rebuying old content anymore so I guess you can keep your expansions.

At this point, the proper response to a major gaming studio claiming they can't do something is to think they're lying.

Is that a little cynical? Probably. But AAA game devs are all too happy to throw a pity party on Twitter and then insult you for asking for better.
Counter-point: They potentially aren't lying as a lot of modern devs are far too retarded to function.
Tim Cain was noticing this shit while working on Outer Worlds, just watch the section from 1:52 to 4:52 to see how fucked modern game development is.

God, no wonder Outer Worlds was so fucking mediocre if this is what was going on behind the scenes. Four (then two) weeks for a single if / then statement that adjusts integer values? Jesus Christ, no wonder why get paid like fucking shit. I understand the idea of "on the job training", but I at least expect someone in woodworking to hold a hammer the right way up.

How can a game company rationalize removing PAID content from your video game purchase? I get surprised when I hear some anti-consumer practice without much backlash. Perhaps the worst I can recall was when Metal Gear Survive was charging $10 for save slots. Actually, it doesn't surprise me anymore since people will eat this up.

It'd be cheaper to just go back to arcade monetization.

The wild part is that it wasn't just some random chucklefuck programmer, the fucking lead programmer came back and negotiated to a minimum of two weeks, imagine how fucked every single aspect of that game's programming is. I was disappointed with the game when I knew that Tim Cain was attached to it but after learning all this shit, I'm genuinely impressed that the game even ran at all.

I've grown tired of blaming management/executives for the state of game quality (which they are at fault with in a lot of cases). The real issue is that the gaming industry is rife with so much blatant incompetency and then we're suppose to feel bad for these literal retards getting canned. The only sympathy I have is for the few remaining competent whites and asians getting fired while the token DEI hires that do jack shit and avoid the layoffs because they're too valuable.

It's especially bad with Bungie because they'll remove shit you paid for and if you complain their army of shills will come and mock you for caring. I heard somewhere that the Destiny sub reddit is straight up modded by devs and community managers. You can tell too because threads get locked if people are making too much noise.

Destiny has THE most confusing monetization yet. The base game is "free," but the expansions cost $20 a piece? What is included in the free game? Also, if they're removing legacy content, wouldn't those expansions have LESS but you're still paying the same price?

Yeah, a lot of people are starting to get tired of the excuse of "upper management" being blamed for every single thing wrong with a game. Maybe you can blame them for aggressive MTX, the push for the $70 price tag, and MTX in $70 games. But when they cry about "crunch" and "being rushed out the door" while asking for weeks to do the most basic shit? Nah, that doesn't fly any more.

It's even more hilarious when the games just suck from a game design perspective. Did the upper management limit the amount of time you had to hit targeted launch window? Yeah, that's an understandable complaint. But the upper management sure as shit didn't sit over your shoulder and tell you to make shitty and disjointed hitboxes for attacks or color the entire game with a color palette consisting of 3 adjacent colors so you can't see what the fuck is going on. The worst is that people absolutely lose their shit if you just say "may the devs just suck?" and will chimp out while screaming "NO! It's not the devs' fault for being actually observable retards, it's clearly corpo greed for why this game got delayed 6 fucking times and it still came out like shit."

The Kickstarter era of games really showed how much of a lie the whole "our games are rushed and mediocre because of evil publishers!" thing was. Most of the games churned out from Kickstarter funding ended up being just as rushed and as mediocre as publisher-backed games were. Obsidian in particular were a hilarious example, whining about the evils of publishers and how they were the bane of all developers when they were begging for funds on Kickstarter and later Fig, then a few years later bending over for Microsoft and telling us how great it was.

Remember when Bungie left Activision and everyone was talking about how Destiny 2 was finally going to finally stop being so full of MTX only for the MTX to arguably get worse?

They made half of the removed content free for everyone, for about a year before removing it, so technically, you didn't pay for it, chuddy. (except I did, luckily it was only like $20 total on Humble because the game bombed on release) It got a shitload of backlash though, but more of the backlash was focused on them semi-removing the weapons people spent hours grinding for, rather than losing paid content. Only to effectively re-enable those weapons about two weeks from now, when the new expansion comes out. Except it's been four years, and most of those weapons were already remade into better versions, or the ones that weren't simply can't compete with the modern Destiny 2 weapons.

The only crowd funded game that actually came out and was good was Bloodstained. Penny Blood the Shadow Hearts spiritual successor will possibly be the second.

Remains to be seen.

I'm more inclined to believe that argument when it's just some content left on the cutting room floor. Obsidian was mentioned as an example of whining devs but they genuinely did get screwed on the release of KOTOR 2. They got a Christmas release date foisted on them, for a game that really wasn't intended for children to add insult to injury. This forced them to cut out a lot of content, and when they asked if they could offer a free patch to fix it later the publishers told them no. Something similar happened with Fallout New Vegas, but at least that time they got to release at least some of the cut content in the form of DLCs. But even with all that cut content, nobody in their right mind could make the argument that KOTOR 2 or FNV were half-finished games. It's one thing to have some content that didn't make the final cut in an otherwise excellent game, it's another thing entirely to build your shit wrong from the ground-up then whinge that you didn't get enough time to unfuck your own mistakes.

I'm one of the few that actually misses the story content that was removed. Don't get me wrong D2 Y1 wasn't particularly good, but it was a lot more coherent than what we're seeing now. The current story is like a bad fanfic and Lightfall is the worst it's ever been.

I miss Warmind, that's about it. Red War was capeshit-tier, almost as bad as Lightfall, Curse of Osiris definitely existed, and rewrote some characters to be absolute fucking losers like Brother Vance and arguably Osiris. The surrounding lore is definitely much stronger now than it was back then, with the notable exception of the Winnower turning out to be fucking Walmart Megamind instead of an actual unknowable cosmic force.

But hey, Bungie is one mediocre expansion away from having all of their leadership forcibly replaced by Sony, and everything good they've ever made barring Halo 3 was made in the depths of "It's so over", so I'm not completely pessimistic about them being able to wrap it all up decently. The Marathon connection at the 11th hour would be fucking kino though, so they won't do it, which makes me sad.

Against the Storm is one of the most boring, unrewarding games I’ve played as an RTS player. It doesn’t even have anything unique to its name, it’s just a genre mashup that doesn’t work.

The same developers that soyfaced over having keggers on Friday afternoons and spending all day on Xitter and Reddit every day for years. They’re never able to put two and two together that they could have less crunch if they actually worked a 40 hour work week instead of just a few hours and then 60-80 hours for a few weeks because the future of your employment rides on getting something out in time for the holiday season.

I think more games should try a timed main story mechanic like in Dead Rising or Fallout 1. It's one of those things you automatically hate the idea of because its restricting by nature but when done right can still have its place in a great game. For this I reckon the game needs to have high replay value, let you carry over progress with every new game (whether that be literal upgrades like Dead Rising or just prior knowledge like Fallout), and maybe also offer a large variety of ways to approach the gameplay a la most CRPGs. I'm aware I only have 2 good examples but my point still stands.
