They do this every time. They take a character they connected with either in ignorance of usually due to young age at the time they viewed it or in spite of the fact the gender aspect to their character is an insult or something not trans in nature but with some overlap and they twist any detail and ignore foreign norms to basically put the creator in a situation of choosing between the western idea of crossdressing freak and offend trannies or that they're outright trans with no regard for Japanese conception of gender dynamics

I'm sorry but you can make shit up all you want but the character is trans, you can spin it anyway you want but you'll be wrong. Also, localisers censoring shit to appeal to arbitrary values is exactly what has been wrong with localisations lately. The way they get creative to avoid controversies has only meant the original loses something along the way. It might not appeal to your own sensibilities but that's the price we pay for expanding our scope. It's the same way we would rather some characters stay underdressed despite what shitty games journalists want. It's a two-way street. Some countries, like Japan, will have characters like Vivian or the magypsies from Mother 3 to inspire love for characters like that (which is exactly what their aims are, not some "indoctoring children into being trans"or whatever gay conspiracy people are saying there is), while the localisers think it's necessary to filter the artist's vision. It just ends up meaning we get told what we're allowed to enjoy and what we're not, and I'd much rather we get some controversial character in a video game than that. Again, you might not like when localisers avoid trying to appeal to western values but it's for the best, even in cases like this.

I'm more pissed that Nintendo keeps charging full price for these half baked remakes with no bells and whistles than anything. If it was a discount title, like hey here's an old game we slapped a new coat of paint on, I probably would have paid $50 for it even with the dialogue changes. However, this is a full priced $80+tax (Canada) title and it's a 20 year old game with some graphical updates that runs at a lower framerate than the original, and the only thing they changed was updating dialogue to be more acceptable in the current year and added a couple of mini bosses. I guess if you never played the original back in the day, it's not so bad, but like from my perspective as an old fart who did, I don't understand what I'm paying $80 for. I had the same issue with Link's Awakening and the Wii U rereleases.

I'll yell this to the ends of the Earth but the art style has been raped in the remake. Here's the thing, the series might be called Paper Mario, but before Sticker Star the paper aesthetic was way less pronounced. The art style was more like some surreal theatre production or story book than just everything being made of paper and this remake totally removes that aspect of the visuals so everything just looks artificial now. I don't care about the frame rate but it is one of those things that would have been kept if they hadn't have fucked with the visuals like that. I know once the dust settles, just like the Link's Awakening remake, people will start to dislike this remake or at least feel like the original was better and would have preferred a straight port of that.
Like I said earlier, a better version exists and it's called Thousand Year Door+, everyone should just play that romhack of it.

Great graphical overhaul, updated controls, a few extras - and shadow dropped at >$40<. Then again, many would want Nintendo lynched if they fucked up a main line Prime game.

Sticker star is to blame for this. It took what made Paper Mario charming and just amped up the entire "HAHAHAHAHAHA PAPER" to an unfunny level. Then came Paper Jam, which just brought it to an obnoxious level. This video says it best I believe.

It was cool when they made the Mario rpg remake with the new graphics, even tho I really liked the old graphics too. Being able to play Mario rpg on the switch was cool so I bought it. I beat mario rpg on Super Nintendo and have it on the Wii U also. But,

The idea of cutting off everyone’s penis in Paper Mario 2 is a step too far for me. A bitter pill to swallow. They didn’t make improvements or add cool stuff, they added homosexuality and negative politics. I liked the humor of paper Mario 2 I don’t understand why they would want to censor it and make it worse. Years ago I did read online that Vivian was a trap in the Japanese version and a regular female in the American version and I felt like that was censorship and I wanted the REAL version. But it was light hearted fun in the 2004 Japanese version but this 2024 American penis being cut off stuff is just too political and too close to devil worship. I’m not buying it.
