Let's face it, Nick's brain is so fried he probably couldn't grasp reality if he tried at this point. He's probably in withdrawal for 3 different addictions, angry as fuck and is in denial about the physical pain he's in. His kids are gone, his guns and drugs are gone, he probably jumped on Locals for a minute trying to pretend nothing happened because he's completely lost it. He doesn't feel remorse because he is physically incapable of it at this point due to chemically reducing his mental capacity to that of a special needs kid. He's not going to actually be "sober" for a long time.

I originally started watching Nick back when he was covering Greer's book, the Maddox/MadDax lolsuit, etc before I got fed up with him partially through the Vic case. Way back then things didn't jive with me even when I was a fan. Why does this loving tradcath father admire the hedonist Dick Masterson so much? Why does he stay up til 2-3 in the morning playing video games on twitch after a youtube stream when he has 5 homeschooled kids? I don't believe much Nick says, but I believe him when he says he's been putting on for people for a long time and he's done with it. The financial independence of the Lawtube success and whatever the previous Worst Day Ever set him free from the moral and religious chains he lived in.

I think hedonist Nick is the real Nick. Maybe he's not so far gone that he's doomed to be tranq junkie, but I don't know. I think he's an arrogant selfish prick and he ain't going back.
